Day-2 of the 2024 Miami Open saw some of the big names in action in an action-packed day. With seeds getting a bye in the first round, the others were seen battling to advance into the second round. For the women’s singles, it was the second day of the event while being the first day for men’s singles.
Americans Sofia Kenin and Bernarda Pera were knocked out in the first round of women’s singles. In men’s singles, Marcos Giron and Darwin Blanch suffered similar fates.
American challenge was continued in the next round by Claire Liu, Katie Volynets, Alex Michelsen, and Martin Damm Jr. in the upcoming stars. Seasoned experts Sloane Stephens, Danielle Collins, and Shelby Rogers also marched ahead into the next round.
Four-time singles Grand Slam title winner Naomi Osaka continues her fight to find good form in her comeback season. Up against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the former World No. 1 won the tie 6-3, 6-4.
She will now take on Elina Svitolina in what will be their seventh career meeting. The head-to-head is currently tied at 3-3 between them. The Ukrainian is the 15th seed at the event this year.
In the battle of Grand Slam singles winners, Sloane Stephens emerged victorious against Angelique Kerber. The German is returning after her maternity break in 2023. Stephens won the tie 6-2, 6-3 to register a win in her 176th appearance at a WTA-1000 event.
Stephens had tied Venus and Serena Williams for the appearance record. But with Serena retired and Venus defeated in the first round, she will now become the first American woman to play 177 matches at the highest tier on the WTA Tour.
In a battle of Americans, Danielle Collins came out on top against Bernarda Pera. Collins won the tie 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in what is to be her final season as a professional on the Tour.
Having confirmed her retirement plans after her Australian Open exit this year, she is looking to end the season on a high. She continues her hunt for her maiden title this season.
Two-time Miami Masters winner, Andy Murray, showed his class yet again. Up against Matteo Berrettini, the Briton came from a set down to win the tie. He won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round.
Berrettini nearly fainted in the second set causing a delay in proceedings. His physical health was affected thereon but he still made Murray earn the win. The Briton will now take on Tomas Etcheverry in the second round.
