Nick Kyrgios was one of 16 professional tennis players who participated in the Australian Open’s One-Point Slam earlier this week.
And, it’s fair to say that this event was a raging success.
It pitted some of the sport’s best against amateurs and celebrities, thus uniting so many fanbases as they all sought to win the $1m up for grabs.
We saw WTA players dump out ATP stars, and relative nobodies upset the pros.
And in the end, it was an amateur player who claimed the ultimate prize, as XXXX overcame Amanda Anisimova and Jannik Sinner on his way to the title.
Kyrgios was one of the first to sign up for this unique event, in what was just its second-ever iteration.
This should come as no surprise, given how keen the Australian has always been to involve himself in controversial or unique facets of the sport.
His Battle of the Sexes match with Aryna Sabalenka last month drew plenty of scrutiny, but he emerged from the One-Point Slam with plenty of credit despite failing to claim the grand prize.
And, asked for his thoughts on the event, he replied on his Instagram story by writing: “
Kyrgios kick-started his One Point Slam campaign against Western Australian state champion Steve Yarwood, who served.
As he did so, the 31-year-old unleashed a backhand passing shot which left both players celebrating, thinking they had qualified for the next round.
In the end, Hawkeye confirmed that Kyrgios’ shot had kissed the line and was in, thus setting up a Round of 16 clash with Joanna Garland.
Hitting another backhand to return her serve, this one sailed comfortably long, thus ending his run at the competition.
Kyrgios would then unleash on his racket in slapstick fashion, smashing it against the court before giving it to a fan in the crowd.
