Nick Kyrgios set to compete at Roland Garros again after 7-year absence

Nick Kyrgios has been confirmed for Roland Garros after securing a spot in the men's doubles main draw alongside compatriot Jordan Thompson. The Australian had not appeared on the tournament’s initial entry list, and his chances of receiving a wildcard were slim, as those typically go to French players and are rarely granted as exceptions.

Once the wildcards were announced, it was confirmed that Kyrgios would not be playing in the singles draw, but that didn’t completely rule him out of the tournament. On Thursday, Kyrgios was officially included in the men’s doubles entry list, marking his first appearance at the French Open since 2017.

The former world No. 13 has openly admitted his discomfort playing on clay and has skipped Roland Garros for the past seven editions. His last appearance was in 2017, when he reached the second round in singles (losing to Kevin Anderson) and the third round in doubles with Jordan Thompson. They lost to Santiago Gonzalez and Donald Young, who went on to reach the final.

Kyrgios has had notable doubles success, including three Masters 1000 semifinals and, most significantly, the 2022 Australian Open title alongside close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis. Their successful season earned them a spot at that year’s ATP Finals.

Kyrgios last played at the Miami Open, where he defeated Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round — his first win since October 2022 — before losing to Karen Khachanov (6-7, 0-6). He then withdrew again due to injury.

Before heading to Roland Garros, Kyrgios will stop at the ATP 500 Stuttgart Open, where he will play doubles using a protected ranking. Now ranked No. 636 in the world, the Australian hopes to stay fit as he continues recovering from injuries during his 2025 comeback.
