No Hamburg warm-up: Stefanos Tsitsipas withdraws a week before Roland Garros
IPA

Stefanos Tsitsipas made a last-minute change and decided to withdraw from the ATP 500 Hamburg Open just the week before Roland Garros. The world No. 19 was registered for the German tournament in search of gaining more competitive rhythm for the French Open, but reports from Championat indicate that he will no longer compete in the tournament.

There is no clear information on whether Tsitsipas is experiencing physical problems or if it is merely a precaution to avoid physical risk before Roland Garros, especially considering that in case of a deep run, Hamburg ends just one day before the start of the French Open.

The former world No. 3 arrives with a 6-4 record on clay courts this season, numbers well below what the Greek is accustomed to, as he usually arrives at the second Grand Slam of the year with more confidence. Since 2018, every year he had reached – at least – one final before Roland Garros, winning the Monte-Carlo Masters three times, reaching finals in Madrid and Rome, in addition to titles and finals in ATP 500 tournaments prior to the Slam.

However, this year he has not achieved great results. Quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona were his best performances, securing two wins in both. The Greek continues to see his ranking fall rapidly, and if he does not manage to advance several rounds at Roland Garros – where he defends the quarterfinals – he will fall out of the top-20, and surely several more positions depending on the results of his opponents.

Tsitsipas's last appearance was at the Rome Open, where he overcame the first round against Alexandre Muller but then crashed out against the 13th-seeded Frenchman Arthur Fils. Tsitsipas's withdrawal in Hamburg will be replaced by Roberto Bautista Agut, in a draw that remains of a very high level, with 8 players from the top-20, led by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
