The World number 62 has firmly denied his chances of playing during the Latin American clay swing. After tasting defeat in the French Open quarter final against the World number One Jannik Sinner 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, Alexander Bublik has spoken out against the likelihood of him playing during the upcoming events.
Bublik would confirm his decision by saying this after a conversation with a reporter.
“I’m wondering if this new relationship with clay will make you experience the Latin American golden swing in February?”
Alexander Bublik: “We’ll have to see the offers huh? I’m not going on my own free will”
“I’m sorry but I don’t think this tournament is for me. We don’t spend much time at home. If I sacrifice the European indoors that means I’ll be 3 weeks in Australia, 3 weeks in South America, then there’s Indian Wells and Miami so I’m not gonna be home that much. As I said depends on what’s on the table but in reality I’m not looking to play that because it takes weeks off from me being a father and a husband, which is also important for me.”
Whilst it can be considered strange that Bublik would publicly make his decision so far in advance it is understandable when you consider the rigours of the tours and how that makes managing home life incredibly alongside that.
Another factor for the early denial of these events is likely down to Bublik's troubled past in Latin America, after he had spoken out before about his experiences whilst playing over there. In 2023 before the Davis Cup qualifiers Bublik would say this “When you raise your head and they (fans in the stands) show you everything they think about you…they threw bottles at us! We all complain, but for them it’s absolutely normal,”.
Next up for the Kazakhstan Tennis star is the beginning of the grass swing where his first game(s) will be at Queen's Club Championships later this month. Set to return to the top 50 after just months ago dropping to 82nd in the World there is optimism that Bublik can one day return to his peak and even surpass his former highest ranking of 17th in the World. All things are looking up for the Russian born superstar and it will be intriguing to watch his journey back to the top over the next few months.
