Novak Djokovic Hopes to Reminisce About Rivalries with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in ‘Relaxed Environment’ After Retirement

Novak Djokovic has no time to reflect on his career. He wants to keep moving and win Majors because, at this stage of his career, it’s his most important goal.

But once he hangs up his racket, he did not rule out the possibility of sipping margaritas on a beach alongside his two retired longtime rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and reminiscing about their careers. He thinks people would love to see them get together and enjoy their retired life.

I don’t know why I said margaritas [during his on-court interview]. I never had a margarita in my life. I don’t necessarily like that drink but I guess it sounds good. I do imagine that the three of us…I wish one day in a more relaxed environment, we will reflect on the rivalries and everything we’ve achieved and made for this sport.

Novak Djokovic said at the press conference after his second-round win at Wimbledon

Federer and Nadal called time on their careers at the 2022 Laver Cup and the 2024 Davis Cup, respectively. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is still chasing his record 25th Major at Wimbledon and has made it to every final here since 2018, losing only in the last two seasons, to World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz.

The Serb sailed past Britain’s Dan Evans 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 to secure a berth in the third round, and in the first round, Djokovic survived a scare against Alexandre Muller, winning the match in four sets. The 38-year-old has now scheduled a third-round clash with compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic.

John McEnroe explains how Novak Djokovic’s drop in rankings is affecting the top players

Novak Djokovic has chased No.1 ranking enough in his career, but now, he doesn’t pay heed to it at all. So he doesn’t mind skipping tournaments and focusing only on the Grand Slam events.

Djokovic lost his No.1 ranking last year to Jannik Sinner who is yet to be dethroned from the top. Because of his inconsistent performances since 2024, the Belgrade native has now dropped to the No.6 position on the rankings table, and that, according to former player John McEnroe, is a bit of a problem for the other top players. He said on BBC:

It makes it trickier for even the top guys. They may have to play him sooner than even they want to. Alcaraz played him in the quarters in Australia for instance, do you think he wants to play him? No!

Before arriving in London, Djokovic did not play in any warm-up tournament. In this year’s two Majors before Wimbledon, an injury forced him to retire mid-match at the Australian Open semifinal, followed by his defeat to Sinner in Paris.

Before the semifinal in Melbourne, Djokovic came from a set down to knock out Alcaraz. In the French Open semifinal, he did not lose the match to Sinner without forcing the Italian to fight for each point.

Djokovic could again face Sinner in this Wimbledon semifinal and two-time defending champion Alcaraz in the final. Nole hasn’t yet captured a Major since the 2023 US Open and the only time he reached a Major final was at Wimbledon last year.

So far this season, Djokovic has won just the Geneva Open by beating Hubert Hurkacz. He also reached the Miami Open final but lost to Jakub Mensik.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion has not yet won a Big Title since defeating Alcaraz in the Paris Olympics final last year. If the former World No.1 wins his eighth title in the grass-court Major, he will tie the title tally with Roger Federer.
