Novak Djokovic snaps losing streak with dominant Geneva win, eyes Roland Garros rhythm
IPA

Novak Djokovic snapped a three-match losing streak with a splendid 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hungary's Marton Fucsovics at the Geneva Open, advancing to the quarterfinals. The Serbian displayed a remarkably high level, securing his first clay-court win of the season.

There had been doubts surrounding Nole's form coming into Geneva. The 24-time Grand Slam champion opted to skip the Rome Open, making this his final appearance before the French Open in an effort to regain rhythm ahead of another major.

First Set Dominance

From the outset, Nole showed great motivation to secure a win. The first set was impeccable from the Serb, particularly on serve: he landed 81% of his first serves, winning 76% of those points, and an impressive 100% on his second serve. These are notable numbers, especially on clay.

The former world No. 1 needed only a few minutes to secure the first break in the fourth game, then consolidated with his own serve to take a 4-1 lead. Fucsovics offered little resistance, winning less than 50% of his service points. Towards the end of the set, Djokovic pressed the accelerator, closing it with another break to lead 6-2, in one of his best sets of the year so far.

Second Set Control

In the second set, Nole had no intention of giving his opponent any breathing room. While the world No. 134 slightly improved his serving effectiveness, Djokovic consistently outmaneuvered him in rallies and troubled him with his returns. Nole was effective with both his forehand and backhand, primarily staying on the baseline against a Fucsovics who struggled to take the initiative in points.

Despite this, the Hungarian managed to hold a couple of service games. However, at 3-2, Fucsovics showed a moment of doubt, and Djokovic capitalized with a decisive break to love. From that point, Nole held firmly to his serve, maintained the initiative, and sealed a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Optimism for Djokovic

There was concern about Djokovic following surprising defeats to Alejandro Tabilo in his Monte-Carlo Masters opener and then to Matteo Arnaldi in Madrid. He arrived in Geneva without a clay-court win this season, compounded by his recent split with coach Andy Murray after just a few months.

In the quarterfinals, Djokovic will have an opportunity for revenge against Italy's Matteo Arnaldi. In Madrid, the world No. 39 secured a straight-sets victory, but given Nole's performance today, it promises to be a much tougher challenge for Arnaldi this time around.
