Novak Djokovic tipped to equal Roger Federer record: ‘He gets better every time I see him’

Novak Djokovic has ‘a really good chance’ of equalling Roger Federer’s record number of Wimbledon titles, says Mats Wilander.

Djokovic came into the Championships this year with six titles to his name. That leaves him two behind Federer but with Pete Sampras firmly within his sites.

He has been incredibly impressive through the first three rounds, and he was close to perfect as he beat compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round on Friday.

He will face Dutch wild card Tim van Rijthoven next, and former world number one Wilander believes he can start to target another of Federer’s records.

Asked by Eurosport if he believes Novak Djokovic will equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles, Wilander said: “I do believe he has a good chance.

“I think that he is clearly the best player on grass and has been for the last few years. He’s getting better every time I see him play.

“It’s more clear to him what he needs to do on the grass court, how he needs to move when he can slide to not slip and the way he has understood to move on a grass court.

“There’s a really good chance he reaches eight Wimbledon titles and that he ends up with the most Grand Slam titles out of all of them.

“But of course a certain Rafa Nadal keeps surprising us.”
