On-court injury forces Holger Rune out of Montpellier as Borna Coric speeds into the finals

Danish tennis player Holger Rune has been eliminated from the semifinal of the 2024 Montpellier Open by Croatia’s Borna Coric.

Rune had to retire in the middle of the second set after suffering an injury to his right forearm. It has raised concerns among the fans as injuries have become a recurring problem in Rune’s career lately, and it has the capacity to potentially ruin what would otherwise be a great career.

Holger Rune was the top seed at the Montpellier Open. He won the first two rounds of the tournament against Pablo Llamas Ruiz and Michael Mmoh, respectively, in straight sets without any struggles.

However, Borna Coric played well from the very first set, and he was clearly the better player in this match. He won the first set with ease and also had a lead in the second set when World No. 7 had to retire because of his injury.

Rune headed into this tournament after a disappointing performance in the 2024 Australian Open. He lost to Arthur Cazaux in the very second round of the Grand Slam and headed home. This injury has now worsened an already concerning phase in Rune’s career, and he will have to put up a good fight to come back from here.

Holger Rune has had a pinched nerve in the fifth lumbar vertebra in his spine since the clay-court season of 2023, and he could not perform well in a major chunk of last year due to the same reason.

After taking a break and appointing Boris Becker as his new coach, the youngster made some serious improvements, which were visible in the 2023 Paris Masters and ATP Finals. Unfortunately, this injury will again set him back by a couple of days.

Severin Luthi breaks his silence on parting ways with Holger Rune

Holger Rune had assembled a team of ‘super coaches’ for him to hire both Boris Becker and Roger Federer’s former coach, Severin Luthi, in his team.

However, that team of super coaches is seemingly getting dismantled as Severin Luthi and Holger Rune parted ways just one week after the Australian Open. The Swiss tennis coach revealed that it was a scheduling issue that led to this decision.

If you notice this, then I say, we would rather separate now than in six months. I think about things like this carefully, maybe sometimes too carefully. I'm glad I was able to have this experience - it was my first job after Roger Federer's retirement. That will help me personally. Severin Luthi said.

Federer’s former coach is happy to have had a brief experience with Rune, as it was his first job after a long time. Holger Rune’s mother also said that they do not want to make a big deal out of it.
