Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts on Carlos Alcaraz's triumph over Jannik Sinner in the epic Roland Garros final. The Spaniard claimed his fifth Grand Slam title, saving three match points and winning a remarkable match in the fifth-set tie-break. This high-level tennis duel is already a candidate for the best major final in history.
Nole arrived at the French Open with the ambition to fight for his 25th major title. However, after a strong run to the semifinals, he stumbled in straight sets against World No. 1 Sinner, who reached a Grand Slam final outside of hardcourts for the first time.
The former World No. 1 has been training at Wimbledon with two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and didn't hesitate to praise him as the top favorite for the title. "Carlos Alcaraz as the defending champion gets the right. I am the sparring partner. I am happy he chose me," the seven-time champion stated after his training. He then added that the balls, rather than the courts, at Wimbledon had changed since his debut back in 2005. "Wimbledon balls are slower than they used to be. It makes it extremely difficult to get past guys like Carlos Alcaraz when they try to get to the net."
The Serbian also commented on the great final played by his colleagues. It was the first time Sinner and Alcaraz met in a major final, and it was more than worthy, with an epic development spanning 5 hours and 29 minutes of intense play. Nole admitted he initially had no intention of watching the match but ended up tuning in after missing the first part.
"To be honest, I was in my country. My wife wanted to watch the final, but I didn't want to watch it. The first part of the match we went outside for lunch. We came back and I ended up watching it. Incredible, incredible match. Huge credit to both of them. It was one of the most historic matches we have ever seen."
The World No. 6 is preparing to contend for the title at Wimbledon, where he has already lifted the trophy seven times. He aims to reach Roger Federer's record of eight crowns at the All England Club. Nole came close to the title in the last two editions, reaching the final but losing on both occasions to Alcaraz.
