Daniil Medvedev hasn't given up hope on his generation winning Grand Slam titles in the future, amidst the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. The former world No. 1 is one of only two players born in the 1990s to have won major tournaments.
Medvedev led a generation of players who generated high expectations. Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas were the most prominent names beginning to make a mark on the Tour in 2017 and 2018.
With Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray all over 30, a generational shift seemed increasingly close. Despite establishing themselves at the top of the rankings, they never managed to dominate the majors. Only Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem have lifted Slam titles, both at the US Open.
Daniil Medvedev, however, still believes that the players born in the 90s are capable of winning a Grand Slam title in the future. Medvedev is currently 29, Zverev 28, Fritz 27, and Ruud 26, among others who consistently appear among the best on Tour.
"We are not as good as Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Murray, and still not as good as Sinner and Alcaraz. But I am sure that our generation will win more Grand Slam titles," Medvedev stated.
Among the 90s generation, Medvedev (1 title, 5 runner-up) and Thiem (1 title, 3 runner-up) stand out, while those who reached finals – but without titles – include Alexander Zverev (3 runner-up), Casper Ruud (3 runner-up), Stefanos Tsitsipas (2 runner-up), Matteo Berrettini (1 runner-up), Nick Kyrgios (1 runner-up), and Taylor Fritz (1 runner-up).
The meager two major titles contrast sharply with the 80 won by the 80s generation – led by the Big Four – which also featured several other champions like Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Marin Cilic, and Juan Martín del Potro.
However, the changing of the guard arrived late – after Nadal and Djokovic extended their dominance for more years than anyone would have expected. It wasn't until the emergence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner that new names appeared at the leadership of the Tour, with 8 titles between them – also sharing the last 6 Slam trophies (3 each).
At the upcoming Wimbledon, there's no doubt that Alcaraz – the defending champion – and Sinner will be the favorites in the title fight, in addition to seeing what Novak Djokovic can do in one of his favorite tournaments, with 7 titles, and where he reached the final the last two years.
