Paula Badosa loses to Elena Rybakina after wasting 6 match balls!
Mike Frey-Imagn Images

Incredible match that has escaped Paula Badosa in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The Spaniard has lost after having up to 6 match balls against Elena Rybakina who ended up beating her by 4-6/7-6/7-6.

First set very complete Paula, very aggressive to the rest, getting many break balls against a Kazakh player who at no time was comfortable with his service. The Spaniard took two of the six break balls to end up closing the first set by six games to four. Elena, meanwhile, won only one of three. In general, the big difference between the two was in the points won on second serve. In that section Paula was much better (71% despite a poor 47 of her rival). The New Yorker continued with good feelings.

The number 9 seed of the tournament continued with the same sensations at the beginning of the second and broke from the start to place herself one-nil up. The 27 year old Catalan was getting the match very much in her face.

However, Rybakina reacted very well and did not want to leave the duel, which made a counter break and turned the scoreboard. I did not want the second set was the final.

Rybakina raised the level of play, broke her opponent again and took a 5-3 lead to win the second set. At that moment Paula reacted, broke and placed the 5-4 on the scoreboard. Finally the sleeve was decided in sudden death. She saved up to 4 match balls Rybakina before equalizing the duel to a set (10-8 in the tie break).

Touched after the missed opportunities, Badosa fell apart at the beginning of the third set and Rybakina took advantage to take a 2-0 lead. She was almost all the set down the Spanish, but without letting go and when the Kazakh served to win the duel tightened and matched the game in the third set. How hard it is to win in tennis.

Badosa had two more match balls to the rest in this game, but Rybakina saved them again and the third set also went to tie-break. The Kazakh player was superior and ended up winning the match.

Patriots have big Drake Maye concern surface at Vikings' joint practice

Defense ruled the day during the joint practice between the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings. Per Chad Graff of The Athletic, the Patriots defense did a masterful job of disrupting Vikings second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy at Wednesday's practice. However, New England's offensive line was unable to allow Drake Maye to have enough time to finish plays. "Even with four new expected starters up front following last year’s debacle, Wednesday suggested that there will likely be some bumps ahead for this offensive line," Graff wrote. "Sure, going up against the Vikings was always going to be a difficult task. Greenard has been wrecking his own team’s practices in training camp, and everyone in New England knows how good Flores’ scheme can be. But the domination was so thorough by the Vikings’ front seven that three straight plays at one point would’ve resulted in a sack." Maye showed flashes of promise when he had time to throw downfield or was able to use his legs to buy time or scramble when pressure came. The concern is that the offensive line won't allow Maye enough time to even scramble so he can make throws. Graff has noticed the same issues that happened on Wednesday have been a constant at training camp against the Patriots defense. With a new-look offensive line that includes first-round pick Will Campbell at left tackle, the Patriots are expected to have some bumps at training camp and in September. New England's offense probably won't look great out of the gate while the offensive line develops in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' scheme. If and when the offensive line improves, Maye will have a chance to show off the arm that made him the No. 3 pick in 2024. For now, the offensive line is a concern much like it was last season.

Browns' Shedeur Sanders could be losing valuable opportunity after injury update

Just when it seemed everything was going right for Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback caught an unlucky break on Wednesday. The 23-year-old QB was sidelined during Wednesday's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering an oblique injury. Per Kelsey Russo of the team website, the 2025 fifth-round pick won't practice Thursday and is considered day-to-day. He is deemed unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason game against Philadelphia, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network. Before Wednesday's practice, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed rookie QB Dillon Gabriel will start against Philadelphia as long as he's healthy enough to play. The 2025 third-rounder missed Cleveland's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers because of a hamstring issue. However, Stefanski previously said Sanders would get more reps this week after a solid preseason debut. The former Colorado Buffaloes star received the start in the 30-10 win over Carolina, going 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes. Not playing against Philadelphia could disrupt Sanders' momentum. More importantly, it may eliminate another opportunity for him to overtake Gabriel in Cleveland's four-way QB competition. Sanders is listed as the Browns QB4 behind Gabriel, Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco on the team's unofficial depth chart. Despite questions about Gabriel's size (5-foot-11, 205 pounds), the coaching staff seems to favor him over Sanders. Earlier this offseason, Gabriel's processing speed reportedly impressed Browns coaches, giving him an edge over Sanders. The former Oregon Ducks star also received reps with the first-team offense during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, while his fellow rookie didn't. If Gabriel plays well against the Eagles, that would continue to affirm the coaching staff's confidence in the 24-year-old QB. Neither Sanders nor Gabriel is expected to be the Week 1 starter for the Browns. It's likely going to be Flacco, who helped Cleveland make the playoffs in 2023 when he went 4-1 during a late-season stretch. Still, another solid preseason showing could help Sanders position himself to replace 40-year-old Flacco in the future. With the setback, it may take more time to climb the depth chart.

Celtics' sale comes with significant and surprising twists

The sale of the Celtics to an investor group led by William Chisholm has received unanimous approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors, the league announced. The results of the vote were never really in doubt, but it’s significant that there was no opposition to Chisholm’s purchase. The league states that the deal is expected to be finalized soon. Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, reached a tentative agreement in March to purchase the franchise for $6.1 billion, which set a record at the time as the largest amount ever paid for a North American sports team. That number has since been exceeded by the sale of the Lakers for $10 billion. Chisholm submitted the highest offer among four groups that were bidding for the team. According to Brian Robb of MassLive, his other stakeholders include Aditya Mittal, Robert Hale and Bruce A. Beal Jr., along with Sixth Street, a private investment firm. Chisholm’s group will obtain a 51% stake in the team from the Grousbeck family in the first phase of the sale and will purchase the remaining shares in 2028. When the sale was first announced, Wyc Grousbeck intended to remain in his role as the team’s governor through the 2027-28 season. However, in a surprising twist, a report on Tuesday indicates that’s no longer possible because Grousbeck will control less than the 15% minimum stake that the NBA requires for the person who holds that position. Instead, Chisholm will become lead governor as soon as the sale is official with Grousbeck serving as alternate governor and CEO through the 2027-28 season. Chisholm will take over the Celtics during a time of transition after years of being one of the NBA’s elite teams. Jayson Tatum‘s Achilles injury coupled with a second-round playoff exit have placed an emphasis on cost-cutting measures to lower the team’s tax bill and escape second-apron restrictions. Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet are already gone from last year’s roster, and more money-saving moves may take place before the new season begins.

MLB Insider Lists Seattle Mariners as No. 1 Fit For International Superstar

The Seattle Mariners acquired their starting third baseman for the rest of the season after they traded for Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 30. Currently, Suarez and the Mariners are attempting to make the team's second postseason berth in four seasons, and they're focused on that task. But there's questions for the team and Suarez after this season. Suarez is set be a free agent and will be one of, if not the most, highly-coveted third baseman in free agency this upcoming offseason. He entered Wednesday with 69 runs in 117 games and hit 20 doubles and 37 home runs with 92 RBIs. He has a slash line of .234/.304/.540 with an .844 OPS. The second-most sought after third baseman will b from Japan. Corner infielder Munetaka Murakami is almost guaranteed to be posted by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. The 25-year-old slugger is considered one of the best power-hitters in NPB, is a two-time Central League MVP, four-time NPB All-Star, won the Japan Series (NPB's version of the World Series) in 2021 and has won two gold medals with Japan — one in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and the other in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In a recent appearance Bleacher Report's Walk-Off show, MLB insider Jon Heyman listed Seattle as his "top fit" for Murakami. "(Suarez) is a free agent. I doubt he re-signs (with the Mariners)," Heyman said. " ... The Mariners have the money to sign (Murakami). Obviously, they've had Japanese players before and done well with them. To me, the Mariners are an excellent fit for Murakami." Heyman listed the Los Angeles Dodgers as his second-best fit, the New York Mets the third-best fit and the Boston Red Sox as the fourth-best fit. Notably absent from Heyman's list were the New York Yankees, who Murakami has also been tied to in various rumor mills. Murakami has hit 229 home runs with 609 RBIs in eight seasons in NPB. He's slashed .271/.395/.551 with a .945 OPS. He's been limited to 15 games this season due to a right oblique strain entering Wednesday. Murakami is projected to earn a $200-$300 million contract when he's posted. There's been speculation he could earn a contract on the lower-end of that range due to his injury. Murakami can also play first base, which could also help the Mariners. Their other trade acquisition, first baseman Josh Naylor, is also a free agent after this season.
