Taylor Fritz found his way past Joao Fonseca at Eastbourne Open and will now return to face off against Marcos Giron later this evening but it wasn't without the American getting a tirade of hate for a message poking fun at a perceived bias towards the Brazilian.
Fritz commented on a video of the match saying: "Commenting this before watching points. Betting this is 80% Fonseca highlights, maybe 1/2 points of me winning."
Used as a joke as opposed to actually discerning any sort of hate towards Fonseca, it was actually Fritz who received the hate as he was given a tirade of abuse for his funny comment and then deleted it.
Fritz weighed in on Twitter afterwards after a user posted the comment: "It's crazy how people have zero sense of humour and take everything seriously, it was meant to be funny like please chill."
Another user wrote: "In two years, you won't even see the color of Fonseca's ball, enjoy it while you can." Fritz merely responded saying: "People are incapable of humor."
He also said he wasn't having a go at the initial user and said that he was 'trying to make people laugh' with the comment and it backfired. But while Fonseca is out, Fritz is still in the tournament and lives to fight another day.
Albeit likely he will be a bit more wary of what he posts next time before a similar result happens again. If he is to win his fourth Eastbourne title, he likely will have to play for the whole weekend before Wimbledon. He leads Giron 4-2 in their head-to-head ahead of the tie
It’s appalling that players can’t say anything on social media these days.

Fritz was quite funny here (like he usually is) and had to delete because he was receiving tons of unjustified hate.
So tiring. pic.twitter.com/ihmqG612x1
