'Please be in Carlos or Jannik’s part of the draw': Daniil Medvedev's hilarious Wimbledon raw wish for Bublik

Daniil Medvedev joked about Alexander Bublik's high level and wished him an early encounter with Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon. The Russian fell in the Halle Open final to the talented Kazakh, who claimed the title for the second time in three years.

Bublik had already impressed in previous weeks by winning the Turin Challenger and then reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros—defeating two Top-10 players along the way, Alex De Minaur (No. 9) and Jack Draper (No. 5)—but ultimately fell decisively to Jannik Sinner.

This time, the Kazakh faced his first grass-court challenge and started strong by defeating Alexandre Muller (No. 40). On Thursday, he delivered the upset of the week, taking down World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the second round. It was Sinner's first loss to a player other than Alcaraz since August 2024 and his first against a player outside the Top 30 since August 2023.

Bublik's performance against Sinner was no fluke, as he maintained his excellent form in subsequent rounds, defeating Tomas Machac (No. 23) and Karen Khachanov (No. 22) consecutively to reach the final. He faced Russian Daniil Medvedev (No. 11), securing his first victory against him in their seventh encounter (6-3, 7-6), and claimed another ATP 500 title, his second in Halle.

After the match, Medvedev took the loss in good humor and had words of praise for his opponent, jokingly hoping that Bublik would meet one of the favorites at Wimbledon and eliminate them. "I hope you are in Carlos’s (section) of the draw," Medvedev said smiling. "Maybe we will have a sensation in the third or fourth round. Continue playing like this. And please, Carlos or Jannik’s part of the draw."

Bublik is scheduled to play the Eastbourne International this week to continue building momentum for Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Medvedev can celebrate his return to the Top 10 (as World No. 9) and will immediately prepare for Wimbledon, which begins in one week.
