The second week at the US Open is about to commence, with day nine hosting the reigning Wimbledon champions Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, with places in the quarter-finals on the line.
Along with that, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka face off in a highly anticipated clash, with the likes of Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, and Amanda Anisimova all prepared to feature in a star-studded US Open line-up.
It takes a special tie to knock down Swiatek to Louis Armstrong, but when you have two multiple Grand Slam and former US Open winners clashing, it makes a bit more sense. With Wimbledon finalist and American number three Anisimova concluding the ties on Arthur Ashe against Beatriz Haddad Maia, it was either the world number two or three who would have to make headway.
Before this, Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime begin the action on Arthur Ashe. It is a golden opportunity for one of these two to push themselves back up the rankings after a recent demise from the pair. Rublev, who has a knack for reaching major quarter-finals, has yet to do so this year, with back-to-back fourth-round exits.
His Canadian opponent reached the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2021. He has won more matches in New York this year than in the last three campaigns combined, with his latest being a hugely impressive win over Alexander Zverev in four sets. It is set up to be an unpredictable tie, with huge rewards awaiting the victor. Following this is the most anticipated match of the night, with Gauff taking on Osaka.
Gauff has not had the best of times since her remarkable Roland Garros title earlier this year, with swift exits plaguing her grass season and even into the North American hardcourt swing. She has had to deal with probelms with her serve, with her making the bold decision to bring in Gavin MacMillan to aid her in this key component of her game.
She managed to squeeze through a titanic three-set battle against Ajla Tomljanovic, managing to avoid consecutive first-round exits in Grand Slams for the first time. She wasn't at her best against Donna Vekic, but showed her class in disposing of the Croatian. Her best performance had come in her last tie, comfortably defeating Magdalena Frech in straight sets with only four double faults, a vast improvement from the double-digit tallies we have all gotten familiar with.
The American number one's toughest test awaits her in the form of Osaka, who is now starting to look like a real danger. In her first event since reaching the Canadian Open final, she has only dropped one set in her first three matches. She has won every Grand Slam in which she has made it past the fourth round, and would be hoping to continue that incredible feet.

Into the night session, and the world number one Sinner is up against the one person aside from Carlos Alcaraz to get the better of him this year: Alexander Bublik. The pair last duelled at Halle, where the Kazakhstani claimed an impressive victory on his way to the title. This is not the only time dethroning opponents vastly higher ranked than him, with him dumping out the likes of Alex de Minaur and Jack Draper, before coming a cropper against Sinner in an eye-catching Roland Garros run.
However, it all may be in vain with the Italian looking imperious yet again on the hard surface. He has won the last three Grand Slams on the surface, and went on an incredible 26 match unbeaten run before it came undone in the Cincinnati Open final against his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz, retiring due to illness and the intolerable heat.
He breezed past Vit Kopriva and Alexei Popyrin whilst only dropping 11 games. He did go behind against Denis Shapovalov but showed his class and composure in coming back and knocking out the Canadian. He will be aiming for a more routine victory tonight.
After that, Wimbledon finalist Anisimova ends the night action againat Haddad Maia. The American's incredible Wimbledon run has been followed by a barren run of early exits and disappointing results, but she has upped her game at the right time on home soil. She defeated Aussies Kimberly Birrell and Maya Joint before overcoming Jaqueline Cristian in three sets.
It has been a frustrating year for the Brazilian, who could not capitalise on last year's quarter-final run at Flushing Meadows as the catalyst for a bright 2025. This is her best performance at a major since last year, and she will have the passionate support from the Brazilian contingent, which will surely help her achieve her best performance.
The world number eight's form has slowly drifted from him since achieving four consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals. A semi-final appearance at Monte-Carlo started a promising clay court swing, but it quicky went downhill. Even after nicking the Washington Open cruelly away from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he failed to capitalise in Toronto and Cincinnati. The Aussie defeated Christopher O'Connell and Shintaro Mochizuki with ease before he was gifted a win against Daniel Altmaier, who retired in the fourth set.
He senses an opportunity to make a consecutive US Open quarter-final, but will have to defeat the world number 435 Leandro Riedi. Sounds easy on paper, but the Swiss has defied expectations in reaching these dizzying heights, defying Pedro Martinez in straight sets before surviving a classic against world number 19 Francisco Cerundolo as he won three consecutive sets to send the Argentine home. He also goes into the last-16 match due to his opponent retiring, but this occured in the first set after leading 5-3 against Kamil Majchrzak. Riedi has already jumped up almost 200 places in the rankings and believes he can climb a few more places before this tournament concludes.
Following that is a much more competitive tie when you glance at the rankings, but it still holds another conclusive favourite in the form of Swiatek. The Pole has had a seismic turnaround in her campaign. Without a title and down to eighth in the world before Wimbledon, she has now a first Grand Slam title on grass along with a Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. She heads into the event as world number one and last year's winner Aryna Sabalenka's biggest competitor, with the fleeting chance of re-clinching her place as the number one.
The 24-year-old will need to win the event if that is going to happen, and is currently targeting a third quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows. To get there, she will have to defeat Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is citing her first Grand Slam quarter-final. She has made progress this year, reaching the fourth round for the first time at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but to compete with the best, the 30-year-old must beat the test, and it does not get much tougher in the form of Swiatek.

Heading off the night session, Lorenzo Musetti looks to set up a possible all-Italian quarter-final clash against Sinner with a win over Spaniard Jaume Munar. Musetti had a phenomenal clay season, reaching the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, along with a final defeat in Monte-Carlo to Alcaraz. The five-time Grand Slam champion also took down Musetti in the Roland Garros semi-final.
A bitter first-round Wimbledon exit was not what he had aimed for after a semi-final the previous year. But after his draw opened for him with seeds dropping out, he took full advantage. Munar stands in his way after. He has recorded his best Grand Slam result last week after taking down Zizou Bergs in straight sets, with a quarter-final place beckoning.
If prepared to stay up, the Louis Armstrong onlookers will have one last treat in the form of Venus Williams in the women's doubles. Teamed up with 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez, the pair goes against the 12th seeds Alexandrova and Shuai Zhang. With the Russian coming off the back of a possible thriller against Swiatek, the pair may see an opportunity to elongate their run in the tournament.
