Day 2 of Roland Garros 2025 delivered several upsets across both the men’s and women’s draws, with seeded players collapsing under pressure in Paris. Taylor Fritz, Francisco Cerundolo, Naomi Osaka and Emma Navarro couldn't handle the red clay, falling short in their debuts at the French Open.
Taylor Fritz, world's No. 4, suffered his worst Roland Garros performance in seven years, falling 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, exposing his clay-court limitations. Despite holding a 37-9 record in 2025 before Paris, Fritz won just 54% of first-serve points and committed 41 unforced errors against the world No. 47. Even if this isn't Fritz's best surface, the American is now far from what he showed last season where he managed to reach the US Open final and the decisive match in the ATP Finals as well.

Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, seeded 18th as the top South American of the draw fell victim to Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. The Madrid Open semifinalist struggled against Diallo’s 82% first-serve success rate, marking his earliest Paris exit after reaching the fourth round on 2023 and 2024 consecutively. Cerundolo arrived to the French Open as one of three players to reach 25+ wins this season but fell in stunning fashion.

Four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka fell 7-6(1), 1-6, 4-6 to Paula Badosa (9) in a grueling 2h24m Philippe-Chatrier battle. This was the only upset that should have an asterisk with it due to both players level when healthy and the Japanese's actual rank (49). Osaka arrived to this French Open winning a WTA 125 event on clay to gain some momentum. Badosa on the other hand has had several injury problems throughout the season, playing only one match in Strasbourg last week, out of all the clay-court swing. Despite firing 7 aces, Osaka’s 54 unforced errors proved decisive against the Spanish 10th seed’s relentless baseline consistency.
