REVIEW | Roland Garros 2025 Day 3 most shocking upsets including Daniil Medvedev and Karolina Muchova
Sipa Press

Day 3 of action in Roland Garros 2025, and the French Open again delivered some shocking disappointments, as several high-profile players saw their campaigns come to an early end. Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov, Karolina Muchova y Beatriz Haddad Maia left Paris marked by stunning upsets or injury-related retirements leaving the draw wide open.

Gentlemen's Draw

Medvedev collapses against Norrie

The most stunning upset of Day 3 was without a doubt the one that took place on Court Simonne-Mathieu, where unseeded British player Cameron Norrie completed a dramatic victory against former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev.

In a marathon five-set battle, Norrie resisted the Russian's comeback after winning the first two sets. Medvedev won the third and the fourth and was up in the final set 5-4, but Norrie resisted and emerged victorious in the end. The British has improved a lot his performance on clay this season, being able to overcome one of the most challenging players of the Tour after nearly four hours of play.

The former US Open champion continues to struggle in the French Open and will have to wait a full year to have another chance in the red clay of Paris.

Dimitrov's historic retirement streak continues

While not technically an upset, Dimitrov's case is perhaps more concerning. The Bulgarian was forced to retire from his first round match against Ethan Quinn, an American player who survived the qualifiers. Up two sets to one, Dimitrov was visibly slow, struggling with movement and pace prior to his withdraw due to a thigh injury.

It was a heartbreaking moment for the 34-year-old player, who had to retire in the last four Majors that he competed, cut short by physical issues. This unprecedented streak began last season in Wimbledon and since then it has been non stop.

Women's Draw

Beatriz Haddad Maia stunned by Hailey Baptiste

23rd-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia suffered a catastrophic meltdow against world No. 70 Hailey Baptiste. The Brazilian, who entered Paris with renewed confidence after reaching the Strasbourg semifinals, appeared to be on her way to victory after leveraging her heavy topspin to claim the opener.

However, Baptiste’s relentless baseline aggression and 48 winners exposed Haddad Maia’s lack of decision.

This defeat extends Haddad Maia’s turbulent season, marked by an eight-match losing streak earlier this year and repeated struggles to maintain form after brief resurgences.

Karolina Muchova's injuries strike again

2023 finalist Karolina Muchova’s nightmare season reached its lowest point with a first-round loss to Alycia Parks, marking her earliest French Open exit since 2019. The Czech, competing without a single clay-court match this season due to wrist injuries and illness, looked alarmingly rusty against the American’s serves and baseline power.

This result raises concerns about Muchova’s career trajectory, with the 28-year-old having played only five tournaments in 2025. When healthy, the Czech is one of the most dangerous players, but lately she just cannot stay on the court.
