Review | Roland Garros 2025 Day 4 most shocking upsets including clay-court specialists Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas
Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

The 2025 French Open continues to deliver yert another day of major upsets, as on Wednesday, May 28, top-tier talents Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diana Shnaider suffered unexpected defeats. Their early exits will certainly leave the draw even more wide open, amplifying the narrative of unpredictability that has always defined Roland Garros but got worse in this year's edition.

Alarms and surprises

Roland Garros 2025 has become a graveyard of seeded players, with Day 4 continuing the trend of jaw-dropping results. The clay courts have proven to be merciless, exposing vulnerabilities, inconsistency and in some cases, physical problems as well.

The men's draw, already fractured by top seeded players' losses, saw two former finalists crash ou, while the women's competition saw a promising contender falter under pressure. As the tournament progresses, the absence of these stars leaves the field wide open for underdogs or dark horses...if they have what it takes.

Gentlemen's draw

Casper Ruud falls

Casper Ruud, a two-time Roland Garros finalist and one of the most consistent clay-court performers this season (and a specialist on this surface), was expected to make a deep run. However, on Day 4, the Norwegian was sent packing, marking one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. Ruud’s loss is especially surprising given his track record on Parisian clay and his strong start in the first round, where he dispatched Albert Ramos Viñolas with relative ease. His elimination against Portugal's Nuno Borges leaves a significant void in the bottom half of the draw. After the match, world No. 8 stated that he wasn't in his best form due to a nagging knee injury he's been dealing with for a couple of weeks.

Tsitsipas' struggles continue

Stefanos Tsitsipas, another great clay-court player who knows how to win in Roland Garros, also suffered an early exit, at the hands of Italy's Matteo Gigante. The world No. 167 sent Tsitsipas home in just three hours, defeating the greek in four sets. This loss is engrosing a list of dissappointments for Stefanos in 2025, following inconsistent performances and a lack of confidence in key moments. It's been 4 years since he made it all the way to the final (where he fell short against Djokovic) and with the increasing talent around the world, Stefanos window could be closing rapidly.

Diana Shnaider's missed opportunity

On the women's side, Diana Shnaider's journey in the French Open came to an abrupt end on Wednesday. The young Russian had shown promise throughout the season, winning several matches. Sitting at world's no. 12, Shnaider had nothing to do against Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska, who defeated her in straight sets in nearly two hours of play.
