Rising star ends 20-year streak, supplants Novak Djokovic atop Wimbledon seedings

There's a new top seed at this summer's men's singles Wimbledon tournament.

21-year-old Roger Federer won the men's singles crown in 2003 (his first Grand Slam win) but was the No. 4 seed. 2002 men's singles Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt was the top seed that summer.

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic were only 16 years old at the time of the tournament, while Rafael Nadal was 17 and still two years away from winning his first major, which came at the 2005 French Open.

Carlos Alcaraz was still a newborn when the 2003 Wimbledon tournament began. The Spaniard was born on May 5, 2003 and play began at the All-England Club that summer on June 23.

In 2022, Daniil Medvedev became the first man other than Djokovic, Federer, Murray or Nadal to be No. 1 since Feb. 1, 2004.

Alcaraz won his first and only Grand Slam title thus far in September 2022 at the U.S. Open, defeating Casper Ruud in four sets. Despite earning the No. 1 seed in this spring's French Open, Alcaraz fell to Djokovic (the eventual tournament champion) in the semifinals.

At that point, "The Joker" replaced the youngster atop the ATP men's rankings, only to see Alcaraz reclaim the position on Monday. Djokovic hasn't played since winning his record 23rd Grand Slam crown at the recent French Open, while Alcaraz earned the bump back to No. 1 after winning a "grass-court tune-up tournament" at Queen's Club on Sunday, according to Associated Press and ESPN report.

Djokovic has won the last four Wimbledon tournaments that took place (there was no event in 2020).

The draw to set up the singles brackets on both the men's and women's sides will be Friday, with the tournament starting on Monday.
