The eighth edition of the Laver Cup, co-created by Roger Federer, has so far been a success.
The 2025 event has already delivered some notable performances, with Andre Agassi and Yannick Noah leading Team World and Team Europe.
Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik kicked things off with wins in front of the San Francisco crowd. Later on, Taylor Fritz stunned Carlos Alcaraz on day two.
The players seem fully invested in the competition, not treating it as just another exhibition. That is exactly what Federer had envisioned when he first came up with the idea for the Laver Cup.
The Swiss legend spoke to Tennis Channel about the competition, saying: “When I started the event with Tony [Godsick], the idea was definitely that this has to be real tennis. You know, this can’t be a hit and giggle. We can do exhibitions elsewhere.
“And honestly, when you’re sitting on the bench and next to you is a legendary player, and Rod Laver is in the building, I’m in the building, John McEnroe is in the building, legends are in the building, and they want to see the best tennis played, I think you come and perform.
“Plus, you have the whole team environment also wishing that they maybe could play instead of you. So you have to show up for them as well.”
Federer also singled out how even Alcaraz seemed fully invested in his matches.
“I think that whole dynamic creates bringing out the best and actually giving really energetic vibes. I mean if you look at how bouncy Carlos was yesterday in doubles. I mean it was very cool to see.”
Alcaraz’s defeat to Fritz gave Team World two more points, putting them 9-3 ahead going into the final day.
That left the Spaniard under heavy pressure on Sunday, with singles and doubles matches on his schedule.
It was no problem for the world number one, who won both. However, his victories did not alter the outcome, with Team World clinching the event after Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev.
