Schedule ATP and WTA Rome Open 2025 Day Two: Emma Raducanu, Bianca Andreescu and Sakkari-Bencic among standouts

It is Day Two at the Rome Open and the ATP side of the draw is set to begin today and the big names are starting their involvement in the WTA ties albeit quite a few are spread around the Foro Italico in some interesting court placements.

Emma Raducanu, Bianca Andreescu are two former Grand Slam champions that start their campaigns. Victoria Azarenka too is involved as is a tie between Maria Sakkari and Belinda Bencic. We look ahead to the top ties to watch in Rome today.

Azarenka, Boulter-Pavlyuchenkova standout on Pietrangeli

Case and point re the scheduling is in fact the ties on the main Pietrangeli court with Victoria Azarenka kicking off proceedings. While a former World No.1 and multiple Grand Slam champion, her light is fading somewhat.

She has fallen out of the top 50 and continues to do so becoming the last player born in the 1980's to fall out of the top 50. She will hope to revive those hopes but faces an ardant clay court star in Camila Osorio who has already won a title on the surface this season albeit on home turf at Bogota.

Also on this court is Camilo Ugo Carabelli v Pablo Carreno Busta and Yoshihito Nishioka v Dusan Lajovic. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Katie Boulter is another tie to watch. The former of course being a former Roland Garros finalist who ebbs and flows out of form. She faces the Brit who joked that she needs to take tips from Jack Draper on how to play on clay as it is not usually a British forte.

Laslo Djere v Tomas Martin Etcheverry rounds out the main show court but elsewhere is where the fun begins.

Errani-Osaka, Raducanu, Andreescu on outside courts

There are so many stories on the outside courts with Naomi Osaka v Sara Errani reviving a tie that we have seen twice ever once in 2016 and once in 2024 so at two ends of their respective careers.

Osaka will hope to take the confidence from winning a Challenger in Saint Malo last week. Errani is more of a doubles star nowadays but being one of the former leading lights has been offered a wildcard. Certainly one to watch.

Also on Campo Centrale is the intriguing 17-year-old Tyra Grant who has defected from USA to Italy having lived in the country for most of her life and having roots there. She was at the draw ceremony with Coco Gauff and spoke perfect Italian so not just a token defection from her. She faces Antonia Ruzic, a qualifier in her opener.

Elsewhere Alexandra Eala fresh from pushing Iga Swiatek again will hope to push another tricky operator in Marta Kostyuk who lost narrowly in the Quarter-Finals last week in Madrid to Aryna Sabalenka.

Then onto Super Tennis Arena where it all kicks off with big serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard facing Jordan Thompson before a double Canadian dose as Victoria Mboko seen as the future of Canadian tennis faces Arianna Zucchini. The former had to win through qualifying for her spot and keeps proving herself as a superb talent.

Then it is Bianca Andreescu who is hoping to revive her career as the former top of the tree of Canadian tennis. She faces Federica Urgesi. She played in Catalonia last week in a Challenger and like her compatriot Leylah Fernandez, it didn't really go to plan with an early loss.

Cameron Norrie got in as a lucky loser and faces Christopher O'Connell before we get Emma Raducanu in a real intriguing tie as she faces Maya Joint who when Andreeva was a teenager was the only top 100 player who was alongside her. A real gauge too for Joint to make a name for herself against the former US Open champion.

Two more ties to watch include Belinda Bencic facing Maria Sakkari who had to come through a tough qualifying run. Bencic holds the measuring stick as of right now having shown consistent form all year and keeps rising up the rankings. Sakkari beat Paolini last week but was it a fluke or is she really back in business.

Then Moyuka Uchijima who was superb in Madrid is back and faces German No.1, Eva Lys who will hope to not just spend her time admiring the statues and make her own history in Rome this next week.
