Mats Wilander believes that America’s Coco Gauff will be one of the ‘favourites’ to lift the Wimbledon title. The second Grand Slam of the year will begin on June 30 in London, where the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova will be defending her title.
Former world number one Wilander has recently spoken to TNT Sports, where he named Gauff as one of the favourites to compete for the title. The 60-year-old stated that Gauff’s movement gives her a real advantage against top players.
"I think Gauff is definitely up there with one of the two favorites of winning Wimbledon," said Wilander. "I think her serve will become better and better because the confidence will get better and better…I think the confidence is massive for Gauff at Wimbledon. She can move on an ice rink, and she's going to be a great mover on grass. And I don't think that that's going to be a problem. I think her forehand is going to become better and better because she's going to understand how much she needs to do with a forehand to win because she's playing to win. She's not playing to play great tennis. She's playing to win."
Those comments came as a surprise, as Gauff does not have a great record while playing at Wimbledon. It is the only Grand Slam where Gauff has never advanced beyond the fourth round. Last year, Gauff was knocked out after losing in the round of 16 to Emma Navarro in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Wilander further went on to back Gauff to pose a serious challenge to Aryna Sabalenka for the top spot in the WTA rankings. "I think Coco Gauff can definitely start to compete with being No. 1 in the world because I think she'll become really consistent," he said. "She is pretty consistent, but she'll become more consistent with that extra confidence of having won her second Grand Slam title."
