After falling short in last week's Roland Garros final, Aryna Sabalenka has been picked to win this year's Wimbledon Championships by former British pro, Heather Watson.
The French Open final saw Sabalenka take on American Coco Gauff, with the Belarusian winning a tightly contested first set tiebreaker. However, it was Gauff who prevailed, neutralizing Sabalenka's power to take the next two sets and win her first Roland Garros title.
With the WTA season having made the transition from clay to grass, the Wimbledon Championships are on the horizon. In an interview with Sky Sports, Watson stated she could see Sabalenka winning her first Grand Slam grass title.
I don’t know who is favourite in the women’s Wimbledon event,” said Robson. “I would probably say Sabalenka because she’s done well there in the past but for Coco it’s been a surface which hasn’t quite given her the results that the other Slams have.
“Even though Gauff has made the fourth round three times, there’s not been that standout result, I’d say, so I think that leaves it quite open for some new faces to come in."
Furthermore, Watson believes Australian Open champion Madison Keys could surprise the field and take home the title at SW19, based on her current form and previous results in London.
"Our second seed here [Queen’s Club] this week is Maddie [Madison] Keys and I kind of think what would have happened last year had she not pulled up with an injury in the fourth round at Wimbledon so there’s definitely a chance for loads of different people," added Watson.
