Six Tennis Players Retire in October 2025

In our latest edition of our retirement series, we list six tennis players who officially retired from the sport. October saw a few veterans finally caving in to time, but also injuries and doping suspensions driving players to early retirement. So, which players made the list?

1. Nicolas Mahut

French tennis stalwart Nicolas Mahut announced in April that he would retire at the end of the season. And the 43-year-old has now formally retired after playing his last tournament at the Paris Masters in doubles. Mahut won four career titles in singles and 37 in doubles. He was also ranked World No. 1 in men’s doubles for over 30 weeks, but he will be most prominently remembered for taking part in the longest tennis match in history at Wimbledon 2010.

2. Casey Kania

In 2023, Casey Kania tested positive for marijuana in an ATP Challenger tournament and was handed a two-year suspension in February 2024 for breaching the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. He did not respond to the ITIA request for information about his case. The only element of surprise is that Kania decided to hang up his racket just four days after celebrating his 23rd birthday. He filed for retirement with the ITIA on October 6th.

3. Enzo Couacaud

Enzo Couacaud became famous for being the only player to take a set off Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Australian Open. The Mauritius-born Frenchman recently shared the surprise news of his retirement on Instagram. While Couacaud did not disclose the reasons for this abrupt decision (he was still signed up to play some Challenger events this season), he was likely driven by his injury struggles. Couacaud, 30, retired from his last official match at the Rennes Challenger in September.
