'Slim-Reaper,' Nick Kyrgios baptizes ‘Octopus’ Daniil Medvedev with a quirky name to match Jannik Sinner’s ‘Carota Boys’ at the Australian Open final

Daniil Medvedev has played exceptionally well against Jannik Sinner so far in the ongoing final of the 2024 Australian Open.

The Russian lost two back-to-back finals against World No. 4 and seems adamant about breaking that streak. At the time of writing, he won the first and the second set in style and is on the verge of winning the last set as well.

Both Medvedev and Sinner stepped into the final after phenomenal performances in their respective semi-final matches. Jannik Sinner did the unthinkable by defeating Novak Djokovic in four sets. This was the first time that the Serb was ever defeated in an Australian Open semi-final match. Medvedev, on the other hand, defeated Alexander Zverev, making an incredible comeback after being two sets down

The Carota Boys, a famous group of supporters of Jannik Sinner who are present in the stands to support their favorite player, obviously seemed nervous during the match. Nick Kyrgios , who is seemingly supporting Daniil Medvedev in this match, took this opportunity to give them an alternate name for their favorite player.

The Australian tennis player is a part of Eurosport’s commentary team, and he said from the commentary box that the name ‘Slim Reaper’ will suit Jannik Sinner better.

The nickname ‘Slim Reaper’ is usually used for NBA player Kevin Durant , whom Nick Kyrgios is a big fan of. He plays for the NBA franchise Phoenix Suns currently and is considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

He is called the Slim Reaper because of his tall, thin frame and scoring ability. Thus, Kyrgios praised Sinner with this comment.

Why is Jannik Sinner’s fan club named the ‘Carota Boys’?

The Carota Boys is a group of six Italian tennis fans who support Jannik Sinner and they made their first appearance during one of his matches at the 2023 Italian Open.

They are well known for dressing up like carrots and supporting the youngster from the stands. The name originates from the fact that Sinner has red-orange hair and that he was spotted eating a carrot instead of a banana at a tournament in Vienna in 2019.

The group has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and is currently fully sponsored. They also sell special ‘Carota Boys’ merchandise on their website for other Jannik Sinner fans. They witnessed Jannik Sinner’s entire Australian Open campaign from the stands and were also present in the final to support their favorite player.
