Spanish ATP player Aaron Cortes faces 15-year ban for corruption charges by the ITIA

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Tuesday (April 9) announced that they banned Spanish player Aaron Cortes for 15 years due to corruption charges. As per the agency, Cortes breached 35 Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) between 2016 and 2018.

The ITIA stated that Cortes fully cooperated with the investigation. It revealed that the 29-year-old fixed matches and bribed the officials to receive the wild card for tournaments.

He is accused of betting, and the ITIA also punished him for failing to report the corruption details to the officials. Cortes has to pay a fine of $75,000 ( with a suspension of $56, 250).

Following a thorough investigation conducted by the ITIA and law enforcement, Cortes, who reached a career-high world singles ranking of 955 in September 2017, admitted to 35 breaches of the TACP between 2016 and 2018, including contriving the outcome of events, accepting money to contrive the outcome of events, failure to report corrupt approaches, wagering on tennis, and providing money to tournament officials in exchange for a wild card. Apart from being banned from playing tennis, his punishment also includes not coaching anyone and attending matches. The ban on him will be lifted on March 27, 2039.

The ITIA was founded in 2021 by its first CEO, Jonny Gray. The organization is accountable for protecting the integrity of professional tennis. It’s also an upgraded version of the Tennis Integrity Unit. Its headquarters are in London, where Karen Moorhouse is currently serving as its CEO.

Many players from across the world have been accused by the ITIA of corruption and doping. The ITIA even imposed a lifetime ban on more than 25 players from across the world. The body even has the power to ban umpires and other officials found guilty of wrongdoings.

Cortes, meanwhile, was born in 1994 in Spain and achieved his best in the PIF ATP Rankings as World No. 955 in 2017. He hasn’t won an ATP title yet in his career. The 29-year-old last played at the ITF Spain F21, a clay tournament in Xativa on July 30, 2018. He met Argentina’s Nicolas Alberto in the Round of 32.

In total, Cortez has collected prize money of $21,854 from playing singles and doubles. He is a right-handed player and is coached by Jose Maria Cortes.
