Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz may not have been playing for ranking points in Turin, but nobody watching their practice set would have guessed it. The two tennis players met inside Pala Alpitour ahead of the ATP Finals and treated the session like a full-on dress rehearsal.
With full-intensity rallies, and a crowd that sounded more like a full-blown session than a weekday warmup. As reported by The Tennis Gazette, Alcaraz has talked openly about wanting to feel sharper indoors.
Last year, the quick court and tight windows exposed a few nerves. This practice felt like his answer. He stepped into returns and looked eager to trade pace with Fritz instead of drifting behind the baseline.
Fritz, for his part, did not show up as a sparring partner. The American leaned on the flat first serve that has carried him deep at big hardcourt events. He also used his forehand to test Alcaraz’s defense in both corners.
By the time they walked off, phones were full of clips and social feeds had their first real glimpse of how ready Alcaraz looks under the Turin lights. Overall, this kind of set is useful because it strips away some of the scouting fog.
Fritz knows that if he lands his first serve and takes the forehand early, he can rush Alcaraz even on a court that rewards aggressive offense. Alcaraz knows that if he can get a clean swing on the return and survive the first blow, the point tilts his way.
Alcaraz is still hot on Sinner batting for the year-end No. 1 win with just over 450 points to go. Fritz is trying to prove he belongs in the same breath as the very top guys indoors.
A high-energy hit between them doesn't stop at much-needed cardio. If anything, it's a small preview of the kind of tennis Turin is about to stage in prime time.
