Stan Wawrinka’s farewell tour started in stunning fashion as he produced a comeback win against Arthur Rinderknech.
Wawrinka, who announced that 2026 would be his final year in tennis, is representing Switzerland at the United Cup.
The three-time Grand Slam champion went a set down against Rinderknech, but two tie-break victories ensured his farewell year began with a win.
Wawrinka has now won an ATP Tour match in 23 seasons, which sees him join an exclusive list with just four other names.
Wawrinka’s victory over Rinderknech saw him continue his streak of 23 winning seasons, which is the highest number Rafael Nadal achieved.
Only three other players are above Wawrinka in the pecking order now, including two of the star’s biggest rivals.
Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet have picked up an ATP Tour victory in 24 seasons, while Jimmy Connors sits atop the list with 25.
Djokovic will very likely join Wawrinka and Nadal with 24 as he currently sits on 23 seasons with an ATP Tour victory.
The Serbian star will return to action at the Adelaide Open and he is expected to continue his part-time schedule throughout 2026.
Fans have jumped in support of Wawrinka since he announced his retirement and the Perth crowd was truly behind him against Rinderknech.
Speaking after the match, Wawrinka revealed: “Today was a tough battle. It’s amazing to come here for the first time, to have so much support.
The Swiss star is playing in Perth for the very first time despite his longevity on the tour, and he shared his satisfaction with the city.
“Twenty years on tour, you kind of always play in the same place and tournaments. So for me it’s amazing to have this opportunity this year to play in Perth.”
Switzerland will play Italy next in the United Cup, meaning Wawrinka will next face rising star Flavio Cobolli.
