Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed that he’s open to adding a new coach alongside his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, to his team. The Greek star finds himself in a difficult situation heading into the Rolex Shanghai Masters, having never won more than two consecutive matches since May.

Normally at this point of the season, Tsitsipas will be seeking a place in the ATP Finals in Turin. But the Greek star is currently languishing outside the Top 20 in the ATP rankings. He missed the top eight spot in the rankings after a poor run last year. And, this season, he has been dealing with a back injury.

The back injury forced him to retire from his first-round match at the Wimbledon Championships. The former World No.3 was expected to recover well and bounce back with a good run, but he failed to do so at the US Open, losing in the second round to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in a five-set thriller in New York.

Nonetheless, Tsitsipas has struggled on tour this season and brought in Goran Ivanisevic to help bring out his best on the court. But the former French Open finalist’s relationship with the Croatian coach ended badly, leading him to reunite with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, to his team, a year after they parted ways.

During his interview with ATP, Tsitsipas was asked if he’s open to bringing another coach into his team in addition to his father. The 27-year-old revealed that he’s open to adding a new coach that will bring a clearer and fresher mentality to his team, while also working alongside his father:

I see our current partnership as sustainable, although I would be interested in adding an extra person to my team for the future, someone who can collaborate and work alongside my father, Obviously, my father is not getting any younger, so I might find a second voice with a clearer and fresher mentality. This would allow my father to step back occasionally and enjoy life, as not everything is about tennis. I have been saying this for a long time.

The last time Tsitsipas reached the quarter-finals of a tournament was at the Barcelona Open, where he retired after just two games against Arthur Fils. He has struggled on the court since then. It is worth noting that Tsitsipas claimed his only title of the season at the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai in February.

Stefanos Tsitsipas shares his goal for the remainder of the season

Stefanos Tsitsipas has not played a tour-level match since the US Open, but he featured at the Davis Cup, representing Greece in the qualifying round. The team led by him suffered a defeat against Brazil and he also lost his singles match against Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca. The 27-year-old will be hoping to bounce back from the defeat during the European indoor tournaments.

During the aforementioned interview, he was asked what his focus is for the remainder of the season. The former World No.3 revealed that his aim is to return to the court without any back injury concerns and win consecutive matches on tour:

My focus would be a combination of seeing what my back allows me to do now and reconnecting a little bit with the wins. Top of my list right now, I would definitely like to see a few matches in a row without back pain.

Tsitsipas withdrew from his opening match against Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina due to an injury. The Shanghai Masters has revealed that it has been due to back pain, an injury he has struggled with this season. He’s currently ranked World No.25, and there’s a possibility he will slip further in the rankings. The Greek star will hope to return to the court as soon as possible.
