Victoria Mboko will make her first Grand Slam main draw appearance in Roland Garros next week, after defeating Kaja Juvan in straight sets of the qualifies. The Canadian, born in 2006, continues to impress with her victories and will now aim to prove herself against the best at one of the year's biggest tournaments.
The world No. 122 advanced without dropping a set in her three qualifying matches, beating Sinja Kraus (No. 159), Kathinka von Deichmann (No. 161), and Kaja Juvan (No. 351 – former top-60) along the way. She will debut against New Zealander Lulu Sun (No. 45).
Just a week ago, Mboko reached her first WTA-level final at the Challenger 125 event held in Parma on clay courts. The Canadian – who was relatively unknown until a few months ago – had an eye-catching start to the year in lower-tier tournaments, with a 20-match winning streak that included four titles (two W70 and two W35).
She had already made her WTA 1000 debut at the recent Miami Open with a victory over Colombia's Camila Osorio, former world No. 33. She then posed a tough challenge for Paula Badosa, though the Spaniard ultimately took the win (5-7, 6-1, 6-7). During that match, the Spaniard had a notable reaction when she was down in the second set while receiving instructions from her box. "I do not know what I need to do, she plays better than Aryna Sabalenka," the former Indian Wells champion reportedly said in frustration.
The Canadian will be among the youngest players in the tournament, alongside Mirra Andreeva (18 y/o, No. 6), Maya Joint (19 y/o, No. 78), and Iva Jovic (17 y/o, No. 130).
