Tennis legend Chris Evert backs Iga Swiatek to break the record for most women’s titles won at Roland Garros
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Will Iga Swiatek , who has bagged three Roland Garros already, break the record of winning the most titles at the clay-court Grand Slam event? Tennis legend Chris Evert has no doubt of that!

Swiatek has arrived in the French capital and can become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to win titles in Madrid, Rome, and Paris. She will also be defending her crown as last year, she defeated Karolina Muchova in the final.

Swiatek is 14-1 on clay this season, and the only defeat she registered was in the Stuttgart Open semifinals. Evert, who has lifted the most French Open titles (7) in the WTA category, heaped praise on the young Pole for her game on the red dirt and the winning mindset she has inculcated.

Absolutely. Iga is a player on a mission. She’s more focused. She doesn’t get upset at all when she’s losing. She just has all the ingredients to be a champion. She really does. She checks all the boxes — the intangibles and the tangibles. Chris Evert said during an interview with The Associated Press

Swiatek also has an impressive 28-2 at Roland Garros and hasn’t lost a match since the quarterfinal loss to Maria Sakkari in the 2021 edition. Her first defeat in the tournament came in 2019 when she lost to Simona Halep

Mats Wilander predicts how many Roland Garros titles Iga Swiatek will win in her career

Iga Swiatek will join Justine Henin if she wins this year’s Roland Garros to become the player with the third most titles on the clay court of Paris in the Open Era. Only Steffi Graf and Chris Evert are ahead with six and seven titles respectively.

In men’s tennis, Rafael Nadal has a record 14 titles at Roland Garros. Former player from Sweden, Mats Wilander thinks Swiatek will dominate at the clay-court major event just like Nadal and predicted how many titles she will win before retiring.

I think Iga is as big a favorite this year as Rafa has been over all these years. He’s been the favorite and he’s won 14. Iga I think is going to win at least seven or eight Roland Garros if she stays healthy. Mats Wilander told Eurosport

Swiatek will kick-start her campaign in Paris by locking horns with a winner of the qualifiers round. She will be entering the event on the back of an impressive 38-4 win-loss record this season.
