'That's a little embarrassing that he was there': Naomi Osaka reacts to Kyrgios courtside surprise in Wimbledon conundrum

Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, kicked off her Wimbledon campaign with a hard-fought victory over Australian qualifier Talia Gibson. What she didn't realize until later was that her good friend, Nick Kyrgios, was in her player's box throughout the match.

Despite Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, being present, Osaka was so intensely focused on her opening-round match that she completely missed his presence. This "conundrum" highlights a humorous disconnect between the two close friends.

Osaka and Kyrgios are no strangers to collaboration off the court. As two of the most recognizable faces on the ATP and WTA Tours in recent years, their partnership extends to various business ventures. A few years ago, Osaka co-founded her own representation agency, EVOLVE, with Kyrgios signing on as her first client.

Months later, they announced their joint investment in the Miami Pickleball Club, becoming co-owners of the Major League Pickleball team. They've also teamed up on various events and media projects, including the recent confirmation that they'll be partnering for mixed doubles at the US Open.

Kyrgios, sidelined from Wimbledon due to injury and not part of the TV commentary team this year, still made his way to the All England Club to watch his colleague's match. However, Osaka remained blissfully unaware of his presence. She revealed that she had jokingly mentioned inviting him, never expecting him to actually show up. "I jokingly told someone, 'Hey, I know Nick's around. Maybe he wants to come to my match.' But I was joking. Because I know we're like 2 completely different players," Osaka said, laughing about the situation.

She went on to reflect on their contrasting styles and her own tendency to "zone out" during matches, which contributed to her oversight. "Honestly I would've loved to come to his matches because I know he's pretty fun. I think that's also a big part of why we're different. I know he kind of tells his box what to do and he probably would've noticed if I was in there, and I kind of like zone out most of the time. That's a little embarrassing that he was there. But yeah, I guess it was cool that he was there."

Despite the slight embarrassment, Osaka expressed her delight at his visit: "I am glad he came to my match. I hope in some way maybe he felt... I wouldn't be bold enough to say 'inspired,' but I hope he can relate a little bit to the things I do too."

Osaka has advanced to the second round of the tournament, where she awaits her opponent from the match between Czech Katerina Siniakova and world No. 5 Zheng Qinwen.
