'The physical condition is not 100%, but I am not concerned about the hip,' Jannik Sinner confirms his participation at Roland Garros as he feels ‘nearly’ ready

Jannik Sinner has been the best player in the world for a large part of this season, winning three titles in the first two months, including the Australian Open. However, the stress of continuously playing in high-level matches took a toll on his hip, forcing him to withdraw from the Madrid Open quarter-final and skip his home tournament in Rome entirely.

Both of these were major, Masters 1000 level tournaments and Jannik Sinner’s absence was an indication that the injury was serious. Speculations were made suggesting he would not play in the French Open as well, but these have been put to rest as Sinner confirmed he’ll be playing in the clay court Grand Slam despite not being at his best physically.

I’m not concerned about the hip anymore. The physical condition is not 100%, of course, but we can't do magical stuff. I know I can play good tennis, even in the kind of shape I'm right know. I decided to play because it's an important tournament. It could be very important, it's a Grand Slam, I want to be part of it if my body allows it. Jannik Sinner said in a statement

Although not very reassuring, this is a positive sign that the Italian fans were looking for. The world number two also provided more good news saying he began practice in Paris a while ago, and is hopeful of feeling better on court as the days go by.

I practiced these last three days, I'm confident on the fact that it'll be better and better every day. Jannik Sinner added

He has a tough road ahead of him, with plenty of big names in his quarter of the Roland Garros draw. He takes on American Chris Eubanks, who made the Wimbledon quarterfinal last year, in the first round on Sunday.

The threat of losing the top spot to Jannik Sinner looms over Novak Djokovic after his loss in Geneva

Jannik Sinner had a pretty good route to becoming the world number one until Novak Djokovic decided to accept a wild card and play the Geneva Open. This gave the Serb a chance to amass just enough points to stay at the top if he won the French Open.

Now that Djokovic has lost in the seminal of the Geneva Open, Sinner’s path is clearer again. He needs to reach the final in Roland Garros to take his place on the tennis throne.

If Sinner reaches the final, or the same round as Djokovic in Paris, the latter’s uninterrupted reign will be over, even if he does eventually win the tournament.
