'They complement each other really well': Emma Raducanu thrives with two coaches at Queen’s Club

Emma Raducanu is working with a couple of familiar faces during the grass-court swing. The former US Open champion has extended her partnership with Mark Petchey as coach – at least until the end of Wimbledon – and has also brought back Nick Cavaday, from whom she parted ways earlier this year.

The British No. 2 made her debut at the Queen’s Club Championships on Tuesday, securing a 6–1, 6–2 win over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. Grass seems to suit Raducanu well – she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year – and she’ll be back on court this Thursday to face Rebecca Sramkova in the round of 16.

Something new in Raducanu’s box is the presence of two coaches working together – a formula several ATP and WTA stars have adopted, most notably Jannik Sinner, who simultaneously works with Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi.

After her opening win in London, Raducanu appeared beaming at the press conference, clearly delighted to return to winning ways – especially in front of a home crowd on the Andy Murray Court. The world No. 37 reflected on the Petchey-Cavaday work: “It’s been a good dynamic. I think we’re all pulling for the same thing; we all just want to improve,” she said.

“I think the goal right now is just to improve my skill level and, you know, have a higher base level. So to have both of them here, I really enjoy it – I think it’s a good atmosphere, and they complement each other really well.”

Cavaday has known Raducanu since she was just 10 years old. They began working together informally at the end of 2023 and confirmed a formal coaching relationship starting from the 2024 Australian Open, as Raducanu returned to the Tour following a long injury layoff.

It was a season of steady progress for Raducanu, who rose from outside the top 300 into the top 60, finishing the year ranked No. 56. It seemed the Brit had finally found coaching stability – but in January, the duo unexpectedly parted ways due to health issues on Cavaday’s side.
