Tommy Paul continues to solidify his status as a formidable presence on the ATP Tour, particularly on clay courts. His recent performance at the Rome Open underscores his growth and adaptability on the surface. After a challenging match against Tomas Machac, Paul now prepares to face one of the toughest competidors of the Tour, Alex De Minaur.
The Worlds No. 12 seeks to return to the top 10 with a good performance in the third ATP 1000 on clay of the season. Tommy Paul reached the round of 16 in Italy after defeating Roberto Bautista in his debut and surviving a thrilling matchup against Machac that went to three hard fought sets.
Paul was up a set and 5-4 in the second, but it was at that point that the Czech elevated his level, attacking the american. Regarding this, Tommy said:
"He stepped up his level. I didn't make too many first serves in that game... But, I mean, he played some awesome tennis." Despite the setback, Paul managed to reset and elevate his play in the decisive third set. He noted, "I started serving a lot better in the third... just to get up early in my service games and kind of take the pressure off."
Paul's commitment to improving his clay-court game is evident. He emphasized in his movement and shot selection, two of the main skills needed to succeed in this European clay court swing:
"I'm stepping back and lifting forehands a lot better... maybe hitting a little heavier. I feel like I'm moving well. I think I moved well last year, but I'm moving forward and back a lot better. These adjustments have contributed to his deeper runs in tournaments and increased confidence on clay.
Looking ahead, Paul is set to face Alex De Minaur, another matchup that carries some personal significance. Acknowledging his 0-5 record against the australian, Paul remains motivated:
"We've had amazing matches. I've had so many opportunities against him, and hopefully, this is the one." The anticipation is heightened by de Minaur's self-proclaimed title as the "Clay Dog," a moniker Paul is eager to challenge.
Beyond the court, Paul embraces the cultural experiences of the tour. Attending a Lazio football match in Rome with fellow players, he shared, "The energy in the building was amazing... It's been really fun supporting them."
After reaching the semis last year, Paul looks to continue with his run and put a stop to 'Demons' dominance in order to keep gaining confidence towards the French Open and continue his journey to become Team USA's main candidate for the second Grand Slam of the season.
