Jasmine Paolini’s Team Italy and Team France both need a victory on Day 5 of the United Cup. Each team lost its opening tie against Team Switzerland, spearheaded by last year’s Wimbledon semifinalist Belinda Bencic. We at LWOT predict all the matches from that tie in this article, and the rest of the action, including Victoria Mboko vs Elise Mertens and Alex de Minaur vs Jakub Mensik, in separate pieces.
Head-to-head: First meeting
Roger-Vasselin has had a great doubles career, including men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles at the French Open. However, it will be very challenging for him to inspire Team France to success here. Errani and Vavassori won last year’s French Open and US Open mixed doubles titles. The much less experienced Rakotomanga Rajaonah must step up and play excellently. Errani and Vavassori targeting her effectively and winning is the most likely outcome.
Prediction: Errani/Vavassori in 2
Head-to-head: Rinderknech 2-1 Cobolli
Cobolli’s early-season conditioning will be tested here. He won an epic battle against Stan Wawrinka, who is retiring this year, in a deciding set tiebreak. The Italian has been generally physically strong over the last few years and will have tried to build on that in the off-season. Although Rinderknech has played well against him before, I favor Cobolli in the pretty lively conditions in Perth.
Prediction: Cobolli in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Paolini was nowhere near her best against Bencic. She has a better chance of winning this match with that level, although it would give Jeanjean a chance. The Frenchwoman is a fighter, but her best tennis is far worse than Paolini’s. Whether scrappy or impressive, the Italian losing this matchup would be very surprising.
Prediction: Paolini in 2
