The second round of the US Open continues in New York, with several intriguing matchups on Day 5. As always, we at LWOT have our panel of writers offering their predictions. Today’s panel includes Ilemona, Jordan, and Tope.

Coco Gauff vs Donna Vekic

Ilemona: Gauff had to work hard in her opener, racking up 59 unforced errors and 10 double faults before pulling through in three sets. Vekic also had her struggles in round one, but she steadied herself when it mattered. With both searching for cleaner tennis, this could hinge on who tidies things up first.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Jordan: Gauff could be in danger if she does not play better than in the previous round. However, I think playing a powerful hitter like Vekic might be helpful. The American was dragged into errors in lengthy rallies against Ajla Tomljanovic, but defending against Vekic’s power will be a different match.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Tope: Gauff’s victory on Tuesday marked her 18th win in New York, and the 21-year-old, who hasn’t been eliminated before the second round since 2021, seeks to prolong that streak by overcoming her Croatian opponent, Donna Vekic, with whom she has traded wins. Vekic has a 3–9 record against top-10 opponents since April of last year, although one of her three wins came against Gauff on the clay in Paris. The result of Thursday’s match will hinge on which iteration of Gauff appears, but all in all, the American with a rapturous crowd behind her should make it through.
Prediction: Gauff in 3

Maria Sakkari vs Anna Bondar

Ilemona: Sakkari looked sharp in her first match, striking the ball with confidence and keeping points short. Bondar did well to reach this stage, but her success has mostly come on clay. It’s a tricky matchup when surface strengths are this different.
Prediction: Sakkari in 2

Jordan: Bondar will try to back up her superb win against Elina Svitolina. Although possible, players often struggle in the next match after causing a significant upset. I have a feeling that will happen against the experienced Sakkari.
Prediction: Sakkari in 3

Tope: Though both have had uneven seasons, they looked solid as they registered brilliant wins in the first round to make this encounter one to watch. Bondar looked exceptionally composed as she gave up her serve just once against the experienced Elina Svitolina in the previous round. While Sakkari is the more experienced player, I’m riding with the Hungarian to make it two wins in a row.
Prediction: Bondar in 3

Anna Kalinskaya vs Yulia Putintseva

Ilemona: Kalinskaya came through her opener in control, continuing a steady run of results on hard courts this year. Putintseva, though, thrives on making matches messy and just battled past a tough opponent. Expect some twists before this one is decided.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 3

Jordan: Putintseva’s opening round win was very welcome after a very challenging season so far. But it has not made me confident enough to back her against Kalinskaya, whose clean hitting suits the lively courts in New York.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 2

Tope: Kalinskaya experienced a minor setback in the opening round; she managed to regroup after losing the second set, ultimately securing her spot in the second round at Flushing Meadows for the fourth consecutive year. Yulia Putintseva also made it to the third round at last year’s US Open, but her experiences on hard courts in 2025 haven’t been positive, and her recent performances against higher-ranked opponents are pretty appalling. I don’t see that trend bucking in New York against the Russian.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 2

Karolina Muchova vs Sorana Cirstea

Ilemona: Cirstea returned with a solid win, shaking off any fatigue in her opener, while Muchova needed to dig deep to advance. Both players can create with their shot-making, which sets up a fascinating contrast. Whoever finds the cleaner rhythm first might take charge.
Prediction: Cirstea in 3

Jordan: Cirstea is on an eight-match winning streak and did not drop a set in any of those victories. Nonetheless, I expect Muchova to end that streak. The Czech’s variety is suited to disrupting Cirstea’s rhythm.
Prediction: Muchova in 2

Tope: Ordinarily, this should have a Muchova win written all over it, but the Czech’s fitness is a big question mark, even more pronounced as she yielded a set to 45-year-old Venus Williams in the opening round. Against Sorana Cirstea, who is playing some of the best tennis of her career, she will need to keep the tempo high to stand a chance. Let the Cirstea carnival continue.
Prediction: Cirstea in 2
