US Open day 7 features several exciting third-round matches in the women’s singles draw. Our panelists share their predictions for the day.
Jordan: Although Frech is a solid player, Gauff could definitely have got worse third round matchups. The 2023 champion struggled through her opening two matches, but she is the best on the WTA Tour at finding a way without being unconvincing. This might be the ideal match for Gauff to find form. Prediction: Gauff in 2
Ateet: Coco Gauff overcame an emotional second-round match against Donna Vekic, who served for the first set twice. Gauff has made a habit of coming through matches without playing her best tennis, which shows her fight and attitude. Magdalena Frech has never won more than three games in a set against Gauff, so it will be a monumental task for her to upset the world No.3. Prediction: Gauff in 2
Ilemona: Frech has done well to make it this far, but Gauff has been dealing with tricky opponents even with her ongoing struggles with her serve. With her speed around the court and more reliable firepower, she should have the upper hand if she keeps her focus. Prediction: Gauff in 2
Jordan: Swiatek, who was pushed hard by Suzan Lamens in the previous round, can expect another significant challenge here. Kalinskaya’s clean hitting in the lively conditions can challenge the Pole. However, Kalinskaya sometimes struggles to raise her game against the best, and she has to be perfect against Swiatek. Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Ateet: Iga Swiatek lost a rare set in the first week of a Slam as her second round opponent, Suzan Lamens, played an incredible match which took the #2 seed by surprise. Anna Kalinskaya must have seen that and will like her chances if she can bring her best level. I can see this one going to the wire, but I like Swiatek’s chances better. Prediction: Swiatek in 3
Ilemona: Kalinskaya has had a strong season and brings clean baseline hitting, while Swiatek was just pushed to a deciding set for the first time this tournament in the last round. Their previous meetings have been split, but if the Russian can keep her level high, she might make this one more competitive than expected. Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Jordan: I favor Muchova in this battle of the Czech players. Her varied style is a tough test for Noskova, who thrives on rhythm for hitting flat shots. Muchova will not provide that. Prediction: Muchova in 2
Ateet: Karolina Muchova came through a physically tough battle against Sorana Cirstea in the second round. The match was full of momentum swings, but Muchova had the last laugh and must be delighted to win a close match like this. However, she looked exhausted by the end of the match, which gives the edge to Noskova, who will be much fresher heading into this encounter. Prediction: Noskova in 3
Ilemona: Noskova is always dangerous with her first-strike tennis, though Muchova has the greater variety and experience on these stages. Muchova was on the winning side of yet another three-set battle, and the clash of styles means she could be pushed long yet again. Prediction: Muchova in 3
Jordan: Parry did superbly to hold her nerve in a deciding set tiebreak against Renata Zarazua, who had noisy Mexican fans cheering her. But I think the Frenchwoman’s run will end here. Kostyuk’s massive superiority in the backhand exchanges makes her the favorite. Prediction: Kostyuk in 2
Ateet: Marta Kostyuk faltered after a strong start against Zeynep Sonmez, who took full advantage and made it a battle. However, Kostyuk still managed to prevail in the end and will look to be more consistent in the next round. Dianne Parry must put pressure on Kostyuk’s second serve to have a chance in this one. Prediction: Kostyuk in 2
Ilemona: Parry has been in solid form, mixing her spins and angles well, but Kostyuk has impressed with her aggressive returning and ability to step in on big points. Momentum feels slightly on the Ukrainian’s side, though this is the kind of match where swings are never far away. Prediction: Kostyuk in 2
