Valentin Vacherot reacts to stunning Shanghai Masters victory over Arthur Rinderknech

Ranked 204th in the world, Vacherot became the lowest-ranked player ever to win a Masters 1000 event, defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.

His path to the final included wins over Alexander Bublik, Holger Rune, and Novak Djokovic. After their match, Djokovic praised Vacherot’s level as ‘extraordinary’.

The 26-year-old became just the third qualifier to win a Masters 1000 title and climbed to world number 40 as a result.

With time to reflect on his remarkable journey, Vacherot took to social media with a brief message: “What is happening.”

The Monegasque player admitted he was still processing his victory, crediting the people around him and sending a message to Rinderknech.

Vacherot overcame Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final. Speaking on Instagram after the win, Vacherot said: “Shanghai Masters 1000. Surreal.”

“No words can describe this feeling. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to my team, my family, my friends, the tournament and everyone who has supported me to this point. It’s beyond my wildest dreams.

“Love you Arthur Rinderknech.” Time will tell if the 26-year-old can build on this success. His run in Shanghai showed what he’s capable of, but staying at that level is a different challenge altogether.

Rinderknech shared a post on Instagram reflecting on his time in China and congratulated Vacherot for the victory.

He said: “Thank you very much to the China Open and Shanghai Masters for this atmosphere incroyable [incredible].

“Huge congratulations to my lovely cousin Valentin Vacherot. We brought home two cups. “The work continues with the team.”

The Frenchman had an impressive run, knocking out top players such as Alexander Zverev and D aniil Medvedev along the way.

His performance has seen him climb to world number 28, putting him in position to be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
