Venus Williams’ time at the Hobart International has been cut short after a first-round loss to Tatjana Maria.

Williams, who entered the tournament on a wildcard, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Maria. It marks her fifth defeat in a row.

She has also been given a wildcard entry into the Australian Open but goes in without much momentum. Her last win came back in Washington over the summer.

Even with another defeat behind her, the seven-time Grand Slam winner kept a positive attitude in a post shared on social media afterwards.

She posted on Instagram: “So excited I finally got to Hobart. I waited so long and always wanted to play here. Best place on earth.”

“Thanks everyone for your encouraging words! Love you!”

It is clear that the American is focused on enjoying herself, regardless of the results.

As well as her seven Grand Slam singles titles, Williams also has 14 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles to her name.

Victoria Mboko reflects on award previously won by Serena and Venus Williams

On the other end of the spectrum from Williams is Victoria Mboko, who at just 19 has already achieved something the 45-year-old did early in her own career.

Mboko, who is competing in Adelaide as she prepares for the Australian Open, was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year for 2025.

Speaking to WTA website about the recognition, she said: “I feel like there’s a history of people who won that award, so that was really cool.

“Having that title or that platform really comes with a lot of responsibility, so it would be nice to maintain more consistency this year.

“If you have pressure, then you’re doing something right. And you’re a player people want to play – and want to beat. So, I think it’s important for me to just stay grounded and keep my head up no matter what.”

She follows in Venus Williams’ footsteps, who claimed the award in 1997 before her sister Serena picked it up a year later.

Former champions also include Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis, and the current world number one, Aryna Sabalenka.
