Alexander Zverev experienced a tense moment at the Rome Open during the on-court interview after his victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-2, 6-1. The German, defending champion of the tournament, had an annoyed response to the reporter's 'stupid question'.
The world No. 2 returned to competition this Saturday after two weeks. His last appearance was at the Madrid Open, where he fell in straight sets to Francisco Cerundolo – in his second defeat of the season to the Argentine.
Zverev has faced criticism for his performance in recent months, with several early losses to lower-ranked opponents, although he began to put that behind him at the BMW Munich Open, where he won a title again, defeating Ben Shelton in the final.
However, since Zverev reached the Australian Open final at the beginning of the year, he hasn't fully convinced, even though with Jannik Sinner's months-long suspension, he was the highest-ranked player in every tournament he played.
After overcoming his debut against Carabelli, Zverev was upset about the reporter’s question during his on-court interview. “You’ve had a couple of early exits in the Masters this year, so how nice is it to get one under your belt here?” the reporter asked.
“I mean, I did, but I won a tournament two weeks ago,” Alexander Zverev replied. “I don’t really like to think about it. It’s your job, thinking about stupid questions, and the match is an hour long, so I’ll leave it up to you.”
Zverev beat Ben Shelton in the Munich ATP 500 final recently, lifting his first title of the season in front of his home crowd.
