Iga Swiatek provided a funny moment in her press conference when asked about her preferred opponent in the fourth round. The Pole was awaiting the result between Elena Rybakina and Jelena Ostapenko when she subtly hinted that she indeed had a preference.
The Pole is on track to defend her triple crown at Roland Garros, where she has won four titles – the last three in a row – and boasts a 24-match winning streak at the tournament. After overcoming a tough challenge against Jaqueline Cristian in the third round (6-2, 7-5), she was asked if she had a preference for her next opponent.
There were undoubtedly differences between the potential rivals. Swiatek has a 4-4 head-to-head record against Rybakina, while Ostapenko has been her "bogeywoman" on the WTA Tour, with a 0-6 head-to-head, the most negative against any opponent in her career. The Latvian's playing style has always complicated things for Swiatek, in one of the most striking rivalries on Tour.
Once the Pole's match was over, it was still unclear who her next opponent would be. In the press conference, she was asked if she had any preference between the two players for the 4th round: "No," Swiatek said confidently, quickly breaking into a smile, before starting to laugh loudly, as did the entire press room.
"Am I a good liar?" she added through laughter, hinting that she had a clear preference regarding her next opponent. "Let's say it doesn't matter…" she added, still laughing. "I couldn't fake poker (face)," she concluded, trying to control her laughter.
Finally, Swiatek benefited from the Rybakina-Ostapenko clash, as the 2022 Wimbledon champion secured a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory. Nevertheless, it won't be easy for the Pole. Only three players have beaten Swiatek four times: Rybakina, Ostapenko, and Aryna Sabalenka, though she has a positive 8-4 head-to-head against the Belarusian. Swiatek will face Rybakina this Sunday, likely with better expectations against a player she already knows how to defeat.
