Aryna Sabalenka earned her place in the fourth round of the US Open after overcoming Citi Open champion Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. Yet, the most memorable moment of the match had nothing to do with tennis. During a break, a marriage proposal stole the show in the stands and got the attention of the crowd.

Sabalenka’s clash with Fernandez at the Louis Armstrong Stadium was a rematch of the 2021 US Open semi-final. The former started the match strongly, breaking Fernandez once to take an early lead 4-1 before the Canadian star responded. But that was too late as the World No.1 ran away with the lead in the first set.

In the second set, Fernandez fought back, pushing Sabalenka deep into her baseline while hitting hard every time. But Sabalenka’s powerful serve helped her keep the momentum despite the Canadian star’s intensity. Amid the match, a man in the stands went down on his knee and proposed marriage to a woman.

Tears of joy flowed down her cheeks as she accepted it, and the man put the ring on her finger, sending the crowd into jubilation. However, that didn’t distract Sabalenka as she went on to claim the win 6-3, 7-6(2). During her post-match press conference, she was asked about her thoughts concerning the proposal. She revealed that it was a sweet moment but tried to keep her focus on the game:

I think it’s the first time that someone proposed during my match. It was a very sweet moment, but I was just trying not to start smiling, because it’s very cute and I believe they’re super happy right now. I was just trying to keep focusing on my game, and it was great moment, and as I said on court, I wish them happy marriage.

She was then asked if the incident inspired anyone else too, the 27-year-old admitted that she looked at her boyfriend after witnessing it:

I don’t want this kind of proposal. But I looked at my boyfriend. Yeah. No pressure.

Sabalenka is dating Brazilian entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis. He’s the founder and CEO of the global acai chain Oakberry. The couple was first seen together at the 2024 Madrid Open. Since then, Frangulis has become a constant presence in her player’s box on tour.

Aryna Sabalenka excited about her “very much important” win over Leylah Fernandez at the US Open

Aryna Sabalenka earned her revenge after beating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets at the US Open. The Belarusian star served six aces and saved all four break points she faced. She also converted one of the three break opportunities from Fernandez. The win now takes her winning streak at the New York Grand Slam to 10-0.

The defending champion will be seeking to win the title which will make it her fourth career Grand Slam and first this season. During the aforementioned press conference, she revealed that she’s a much-improved player than when she lost to the Canadian in 2021:

It was a tough match. It was a tough lesson for me back then. We never played since. I just wanted to prove to myself that I had learned the lesson, improved as a player, and yes, that I could achieve this victory. I won the match, and it was very important because she played an incredible tennis. It was a tough match, but I managed it quite well, and I am very happy about it.

Sabalenka will now face Cristina Bucsa in the fourth round of the US Open. It will be their first meeting on tour. Sabalenka is the favorite to win the clash, which will potentially see her go through to the quarter-finals. She has reached the semi-finals of all the Grand Slams this season, but is yet to win the title.
