World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz continues his bid to retain the Indian Wells Masters title. The second seed has moved into the quarter-finals of the 2024 edition after a routine victory over Fabian Marozsan. The Spaniard won the tie 6-3, 6-3 to level their head-to-head at 1-1 and reach the last-8.

Alcaraz needed just 1 hour and 15 minutes to secure the win. In the process, he also registered his 50th Tour win at the Masters-1000 level. The four-time winner at the Masters-1000 tier, he is looking to make a successful title defense and clinch his 13th career title.

In contrast to their previous meeting where Marozsan got the better of him, Alcaraz came into the match having done his ‘homework’. He dominated in nearly every aspect of the statistics and saved both the breakpoint opportunities that he faced. He eventually won the tie by winning 63 of the 107 points.

As is the ritual, the winning player is asked to write something on one of the cameras. Following his previous round win, he had simply written ‘N’ leaving fans confused. But that ‘N’ finally has some context after the latest message written by the 20-year-old after win over the Hungarian.

Alcaraz wrote ‘TUDUM’ on the camera, a sound effect that is associated with OTT giant Netflix. With the tennis series ‘Break Point’ getting canceled on Netflix after just two seasons, one can believe Alcaraz meant to maybe give a shoutout to the show that received a mixed reception from players, fans, and critics.

The two-time singles Grand Slam title winner featured in both seasons. Given his recent notes on the camera, one can assume he was a fan of the series and disappointed by the sudden end of the show.

An epic tie awaits Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals

Following the shocking exit of Novak Djokovic in the third round, the chances of Alcaraz surely increased. Now playing as the highest remaining seed in the draw, he would have thought his path might have just become easy. But that’s not the case.

For a place in the semi-finals, he now has to take on World No. 6 Alexander Zverev. The German No. 1 defeated Aussie hotshot Alex de Minaur in a tight three-set encounter. Zverev won the tie 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals in Indian Wells for the second time in his career.

He currently leads the head-to-head 7-3 against Alcaraz of which the hard court record stands at 6-1. He had defeated the Spaniard in the quarter-finals of this year’s Australian Open where he convincingly outplayed him. With a place in the semis and revenge on Alcaraz’s mind, this match will surely be a blockbuster.
