Another Grand Slam tournament and another semifinal appearance. At the age of 38, only a player of Novak Djokovic‘s caliber can do it.
After a thrilling three-hour, 24-minute battle against Taylor Fritz, Djokovic will be playing the US Open semifinal for the 14th time in his career. Djokovic, who last year crashed out of the tournament after defeat to Alexei Popyrin in the third round, has extended his head-to-head record over the American to 14-0.
Given that he was up against a home player, the majority of the crowd was backing Fritz, and also interrupted Djokovic when he was serving. Djokovic silenced the crowd when he stopped Fritz from forcing a comeback in the second set. But in the following set, he complained to chair umpire Damien Dumusois about the noisy crowd.
What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do? Are you gonna say…what would you say? Thank you, please, thank you, please? Can you explain a little bit more?
Novak Djokovic yelled
Dumusois shot back, saying he had asked the crowd to stop shouting when both players are ready. Djokovic asked him what exactly he said.
I just said it. Now you play, I’m gonna say something. It’s not gonna help Novak!
Damien Dumusois responded
The umpire seemed to be telling Djokovic that his warning also cannot control the crowd, as Djokovic rolled his eyes and walked away.

Last year’s US Open runner-up’s Grand Slam campaigns this year have ended without him making it to a final. His best performance in the Majors this season came at Wimbledon, when he reached the semifinal (lost to eventual runner-up Carlos Alcaraz).
Taylor Fritz will regret not capitalizing on the opportunities. Novak Djokovic saved 11 of the 13 break points, converting four of his nine break points.
In the fourth set, Fritz saved two match points, but it was too late. The last point that Djokovic won came off Fritz’s double fault.
I didn’t feel like I was dominating today from the back of the court. In many of my service games, I was just trying to stay alive, fight for every ball. He was aggressive, staying close to the line. Not easy to play him. At the end of the day, winning matters, and I’m really proud of the fight that I put in, and I wear my heart on my sleeve always for this sport. I’m still enjoying it.
Novak Djokovic said during his on-court interview
Fritz has so far clinched two titles this season- both during the grass swing- the Stuttgart Open and the Eastbourne International. Djokovic, who last lifted a Big Title at the 2024 Paris Olympics by beating Carlos Alcaraz, is aiming to reach his third final of the season after the Miami Open (lost to Jakub Mensik) and the Geneva Open (beat Hubert Hurkacz).
The 100-time ATP titlist has set up a mouthwatering US Open semifinal match against Alcaraz, whose Career Grand Slam goal was ruined by the Serb with a four-set win in the Australian Open quarterfinal this year. Djokovic, who leads 5-3 in the head-to-head matchups against the five-time Grand Slam champion, will be facing Alcaraz at Flushing Meadows for the first time.
The youngster and the veteran are tied at 2-2 in Grand Slam events, with the former winning those matches in the Wimbledon finals in 2023 and 2024. Alcaraz knocked out Jiri Lehecka in straight sets to reach the US Open semifinal for the third time in his career.
While the four-time US Open champion last clinched a Major title in 2023 here in New York, the Spaniard is bidding to double his Grand Slam tally this year as he defended his French Open crown after tough five sets against Jannik Sinner.
