Joao Fonseca was visibly emotional after securing his place in the third round at Wimbledon. Cheered on by South American fans, the 18-year-old Brazilian defeated American Jenson Brooksby in four sets. The match lasted just over three hours, ending 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in Fonseca’s favor.

Fonseca began his Wimbledon debut by beating Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in straight sets. His rapid rise in 2024 has been remarkable, jumping from outside the top 700 to world No. 145. A major part of that progress came from a quarterfinal run at the ATP 500 event in Rio.

The Brazilian’s breakout season began with a stunning upset of world No. 9 Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open. He followed that with his first ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires. Later, he joined Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as one of just three 18-year-olds to win the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Joao Fonseca equals best Grand Slam run

Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca continued his impressive Wimbledon debut with a strong second-round win on Wednesday. His powerful baseline play helped him overcome the tricky, windy conditions on the court.

With the win, Fonseca became the first Brazilian man to reach the third round at Wimbledon since Thomaz Bellucci in 2010. Brooksby tried to disrupt his rhythm with variety and long rallies, but the 18-year-old stayed composed and struck clean winners when it mattered.

This victory also makes Fonseca the youngest man to reach the Wimbledon third round since Bernard Tomic did so in 2011. It’s another milestone in a breakthrough season for the #NextGenATP talent. His mix of power and poise has impressed fans and analysts alike.

Fonseca will now face Nicolas Jarry in the next round. The Chilean advanced after a comfortable straight-sets win over American teenager Learner Tien. The upcoming match will be a new test for Fonseca as he aims to continue his historic run at the All England Club.

How Joao Fonseca made history at Wimbledon?

Teenage sensation Joao Fonseca faced challenges with movement during his second-round match at Wimbledon, playing just his fourth grass-court tournament at tour level. Despite occasional slips, he found energy in the lively Court 12 crowd. Backed by enthusiastic Brazilian and American supporters, the teenager played aggressively and racked up 50 winners, including a remarkable backhand from deep behind the baseline.

Jenson Brooksby entered the match with momentum, having reached the Eastbourne final the week before. He used his trademark variety, including frequent drop shots, to disrupt Fonseca’s rhythm. At 4-4 in the fourth set, Brooksby managed to break back and briefly shift the momentum. However, Fonseca responded quickly and sealed the win with confidence.

The 18-year-old had a third-round run at Roland Garros, and now he’s matching that success at Wimbledon. With each round, Fonseca is proving he belongs at the highest level and is quickly becoming one of the standout young stars of 2025.
