Watch: Novak Djokovic shuts the crowd after hitting an INSANE volley from the baseline against Taylor Fritz
Kyodo News

Novak Djokovic continues his sublime form and keeps on delivering fan-service. On Tuesday, Nole hit an insane serve and volley from the baseline against American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, leaving spectators mesmerized.

Djokovic showed unique strength to seal off a remarkable win against Taylor Fritz 7-6(3) 4-6 6-2 6-3. The Serbian saved 15 break points from the first set. Even though the American threatened in the second set by surviving three break points and nine deuces, he could not stop a formidable Djokovic at his favorite ground.

In a video posted by Australian Open on X (formerly known as Twitter), Djokovic’s serve volleyed from the baseline and Fritz couldn’t return the second rebound in the second set. That was one of Djokovic’s squealing pig-cheeky moments against Fritz in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic has 10-Australian Open titles and in close to lifting another crown. The 36-year-old looks to continue from his 2023 form, though many had feared that after his early defeat at the United Cup due to his struggle with his wrist that he wasn’t going to perform well. But recent games have shown how resilient the 24-time Grand Slam winner can be.

However, Jannik Sinner, Nole’s next round opponent, remains one of the favorites to win the Melbourne crown, following his rise last year when he became the first player to beat the Top 3 twice in a season.

Novak Djokovic to play Jannik Sinner in the semifinals

In the quarterfinal clash between Djokovic and Fritz, the Serbian showed brilliance by saving 15 break points against the gusty American in a two hours and 39 minutes contest.

After Fritz had won the second set following his lost in the tiebreak first set, the youngster began to show fatigue, allowing Djokovic to beat him in quick succession. With Fritz’s resistance over, Djokovic comfortably served his way into a 48th Grand Slam semi-final.

Djokovic will now face new rival Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the 2024 Australian Open. The Italian had defeated Andrey Rublev to book the match against the Serbian.

Jannik Sinner, who defeated Djokovic at the back end of the 2023 season, is no new opponent for the 36-year-old. The Italian had picked his first victory against Djokovic at the group stages of the Nitto ATP Finals but then lost in the Ultimate finals to Djokovic with the backing of the Italian crowd. Then in the semifinals of the Davis Cup, Sinner defeated Djokovic and helped Italy win their first Davis title in over three decades.
