Abaca Press

In the world of tennis, there have been multiple instances where a player who is on the verge of winning just loses all momentum before losing the match. The same happened with No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev during his match against Daniil Medvedev.

Both the well-ranked players were up against each other for the 19th time. Despite losing to Medvedev around 11 times, the German was off to a binder start. He had a convincing 2-set lead over World No. 3 but failed to capitalize on the moment.

After coming extremely close to finishing the match in straight sets, Zverev failed to seize the chance and gave his opponent a chance to come back. Even after multiple tries, the German was unable to defend the next two sets in the tie-break, taking the match into the fifth set.

Frustration building inside him, Zverev made a few unforced errors, allowing Medvedev to lead in the fifth set. All that frustration came out when he missed an easy volley. Due to this, Zverev hit the net multiple times out of rage. Due to this, the match was halted for a while as the net camera was repaired and set to resume the game.

Alexander Zverev’s net incident sparked a few controversies as he lost the game despite coming very close

Alexander Zverev lost his clear ticket to the finals as failed to capitalize on his two-set lead against Daniil Medvedev.

The stage was perfectly set for Zverev to star in a straight-set win against the Russian, but he failed to finish the match.

This allowed his opponent to come back and eventually win the match. From playing the hero of the night, he became the villain in front of the world after the net incident. This incident did not help Zverev in any way, as he faced a lot of backlash from all the fans.

However, Medvedev, fueled by his opponent’s frustration did not waste any time to zoom off with a victory. He beat Zverev in five sets, 5-7,3-6,7-6(4),7-6(5),6-3 to make it to his third Australian Open finals. He will play Jannik Sinner in the finals in hopes of winning a maiden Australian Open title. After three years, Australia will watch as a new champion replaces Novak Djokovic.
