Judy Murray has shared details of going through financial struggles during Andy Murray’s playing days. Andy is often regarded as the greatest British player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category.
He became the first British player to win a Grand Slam in the Open era. Andy finished his career last year after representing Team Great Britain during the Paris Olympics. Murray finished with three Grand Slam titles to his name, including two Wimbledon titles and a US Open. He also won two Olympic gold medals for his country, both in the singles category.
Andy’s success earned him a fortune. He is valued at over £100 million, but his journey would have been a lot different if it weren’t for the sacrifices of his family. Andy's mother, Judy, has recently been quoted in a report by the English media outlet Daily Express, where she highlighted that the Murray family had a difficult time financially during the early days of her son's playing career. Judy stated that the toughest time came in 2002 when they were trying to send Andy to Europe for training, but that plan was set to cost a fortune.
"The toughest time financially was when we needed to send Andy to Barcelona for his training," said Judy. "It was 2002, and he was about 15. He was one of the best in Europe at that point. He needed to leave the country because he needed a tougher training environment with a different variety of sparring partners. It was like going to an expensive boarding school that specialised in tennis. The problem was that we were going to need £30,000-35,000 a year. That was more than my entire salary. My pension was a big learning curve in my relationship with money. For most of my life, I didn’t have money. Even as a top-level national coach in 1995, I earned £25,000. It was a very small salary job. I have been self-employed for most of my life and didn’t start making pension contributions until much later. I didn’t think about it."
