The grass swing has ended. In women’s tennis, Iga Swiatek ended her title drought by beating Amanda Anisimova in straight sets in the Wimbledon final.

In the men’s Wimbledon final, Jannik Sinner took his revenge on Carlos Alcaraz. These four players, however, will not be a part of the ongoing Citi Open. They will start their campaigns on the North American hard-court swing at the Canadian Open, which starts on July 27.

Citi Open is the first WTA 500 and ATP 500 event on the North American hard-court swing. It is the only combined ATP and WTA 500 event of the season. Paula Badosa is the defending champion, but she has pulled out of the event due to injury problems. In her place, Anastasia Potapova will be playing.

In the men’s event, Sebastian Korda was the winner last year, and he, too, will not be playing. He is replaced by Christopher O’Connell. Taylor Fritz, the 2024 US Open finalist, will be the top seed. In the women’s event, last year’s US Open finalist Jessica Pegula is the first seed.

Venus Williams has accepted a wild card for the Citi Open. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion will be participating in a tournament for the first time in 16 months. It was at the 2024 Miami Open where she was last seen in action.

The Citi Open is held. The Qualifying rounds are currently underway and will be wrapped up on July 20. From July 21 to July 27, the main draw event will be played. The tournament is held at William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park in Washington.

Apart from Pegula, Emma Navarro and Sofia Kenin are the other two seeded American players on the women’s side. Among these participants, the World No.4 has achieved the most success this season. She has so far played five finals, winning three titles: at the ATX Open, Charleston Open, and the Bad Homburg Open.

Pegula will be aiming to win her third title here following the 2019 and 2021 seasons. In 2021, she defeated Coco Gauff in the final. Gauff, the winner here in 2023, won’t be playing the home event.

Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, will be bidding to win her second title of the season. She ended her title drought by lifting the Internationaux de Strasbourg trophy by beating Liudmila Samsonova. In last year’s Citi Open final, Paula Badosa went past Marie Bouzkova in three sets.

In last year’s men’s final, Sebastian Korda defeated Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. Two-time Citi Open champion Nick Kyrgios will be playing doubles along with Gael Monfils. It will be the Aussie’s first tournament since the Miami Open, where he registered his first match win of the season in singles.

In singles, apart from Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, Ben Shelton, Andrey Rublev, and Frances Tiafoe, among others, will headline the event. Fritz will be aiming to win his third title of the season following his victories at the Stuttgart Open and the Eastbourne International, the two grass-court tournaments.

Medvedev will continue his hunt for his first title since lifting the 2023 Italian Open. Since then, he has played six finals, losing all, including this year’s Halle Open.
